Reeves Wraps A Scanner Darkly, Based On Pilip K. Dick Novel
Warner Independent Pictures has completed production on Richard Linklater's adaptation of Philip K. Dick's landmark science fiction novel, A Scanner Darkly. Starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson and Rory Cochrane, the story is set in a world where the war on drugs has been lost and Reeve plays undercover police agent Fred. In the novel, the drug of the day is Substance D which causes users to develop split personalities. While undercover, Fred gets hooked and becomes drug dealer Bob Arctor. Fred is then assigned to, in effect, investigate himself.

Sounds like a great project. But, a couple of the players seem... a little out of place.
Linklater: Loved Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and School Of Rock. So, in my book, he's solid.
Philip Dick: I've seen movies adapted from his work (Minority Report, Blade Runner and Total Recall). Good stuff. I've not read his material, but with the right direction, it seems to adapt well to the big screen.
Keanu: Hmmm... after more than a decade in the business, jury is still out on him.
Downey, Jr.: Awesome. I love everything I see him in.
Ryder: She's back in the movies?! That should be interesting. I think her last outing was Girl, Interrupted, right?
Harrelson: He's another actor that I love watching. Great stuff from him in the past.
Cochran: Okay, I had to "IMDB" him. I've literally never seen a movie with him in it.
Well, I'm excited! Any idea when it's scheduled for release?

Ok, I've read the book and it was a total work of art. It really did keep me hooked. As for the actors in it.....Keanu Reeves......he's my all time most favourite actor ever. He is a beautiful man who adores the biz. I think he is a great actor as well. As for Winona....lets just say she isn't really the best....not exactly at the top of my list. Well, she isn't THAT bad. Actually I kind of enjoyed Mr. Deeds haha. Haven't really heard much of the other actors but I'm really looking forward to the film!

I also read the Philip K. Dick sci-fi novel and enjoyed it very much - especially knowing the actors who are playing each character in the book. Keanu as Arctor, Winona Ryder as Donna, Woody Harrelson as Luckman, Rory Cochrane (CSI Miami) as Freck and Robert Downey Jr. as Barris. The story is about the war on drugs set in the future and Arctor (Keanu Reeves) is not sure what side he's on. This is a bit of a mystery with also a great deal of dark humour.
I watched one of Linklater's previous films called Waking Life because I wanted to check out the animation technique they will be using here. This animation, accompanied by a great (anti-drug) futuristic story, and wonderful actors will make this a film for your must-see list in 2005. Linklater is maturing as a filmmaker and can produce a contemporary hit like School of Rock, and then do an old fashioned romance like Before Sunset. A Scanner Darkly is due out Sept 16, 2005.
FYI...Richard Linklater's next project The Smoker, with Natalie Portman and Owen Wilson looks promising as a drama based on the short story by David Schickler.
