Do we need more War Games?

MGM has announced a July start date for the sequel to 1983's War Games. The sequel will be called War Games II: The Deadly Key, and will follow Cory Carpenter on a class trip in Europe when the authorities wrongly mistake him for a cyber criminal.

“Carpenter's long-time internet pal Jay Forell - whom Carpenter later discovers isn't so much a human as he is a government computer that's gone haywire - implants a plan for nuclear disaster by bringing down an unsuspecting planet,” reports moviehole.

The film is scheduled to shoot in Europe and Philadelphia, and tipped for a direct-to-DVD release sometime next year. None of the stars of the original film are expected to return for the sequel. Like Matthew Broderick would put his name on this?

Why, God, why? This is a geek classic which I fell in love with in the 1980’s. Why must Hollywood ruin this by trying to make it a franchise? The story seems laughable at best. And it doesn’t seem like they are even confident of it as it’s a direct to DVD release. Why not just celebrate the twentieth anniversary with a re-release or a new super special edition DVD?
