Star Wars Episode III hits Bit Torrent
Filed under: Action, Classics, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, New Releases
George Lucas tried, and he tried hard. So, I'm sorry to tell him but, George... the film is already online. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith appears to have hit the bit torrent networks and thousands of people are currently downloading it. I know, I know, you may be asking yourself how a copy of a movie that just had its world premiere this week can already be online. I don't really have an answer for this one but we know people are crafty. And it was Georgie's big idea to distribute the film digitally. So, connect the dots. (I kid George) Actually, someone I spoke with had a camera copy of the movie last month, so the internet is a little late on this one. I have yet to finish--I mean, I would never download a copyrighted movie so I can't say for sure how good the internet release is... But I'm assuming it's the same camera copy that's being sold on the streets. I can tell you that the copy online is a single cd VCD file, so the quality at best would be VHS level. Unfortunately I'm unable to post the website where you can download Episode III due to the digital millenium copyright law, but I'm sure if you think like a SPY, or HUNT for it, you'll figure it out.Update: Star Wars Episode III on Bit Torrent Update

"And it was Georgie's big idea to distribute the film digitally." uhhh...don't you think it's a bit irresponsible to imply that this is the result of his decision to distribute the film digitally? last thing anyone needs is for distributers to get skiddish about the safety of digitally-distributed films vs. celluloid distribution because of unfounded rumors. and besides, analog verions were out before digital. isn't it possible that someone digitized one of the analog bootlegs?

I think the leak has more to do with the legions of geeks waiting to the movie and less with the digital distribution. According to your post the file is probably from a cam which means said digital files weren't pirated (otherwise it would probably be a 2GB download in perfect quality).

To clarify things, the digital distribution thing was a joke. Hence the I kid George line that followed. Apparently I'm not funny though :(

Actually it is about distribution. People would pay to download it if they could do so legitimately and would STILL go see it in the theater.
So, make of it what you will, if you do thing it will be just the MP3 situation and sue kids and call people thieves. If they were smart about it, they could be the next ITunes success.

Of course if movies came out in theater and at home in form of downloads a profit would still be made and I believe eventually that is where the industry is going.
That said those kids are thieves and should be sued until they cry. I worked at a candy store for 2 years the owner had the store for over 20 years. At the time I worked there they sold loose candy for a penny a piece, theiving kids with $20 in there pockets would rob handfuls every single day. The owner retired but not rich and dammit he should have.
And no somus Porno theaters, Hat shops for men, cobblers and blacksmiths all existed on every corner and with few exceptions are gone. With cheap in home theaters that are internet capable one day theaters will as scarce as drive-ins.

The people that would download this are the hardcore fans who can't wait to see it in the theatres. And those same people will most likely still pay to see it in the theatre later (and say obnoxiously, "watch, this next part is cool"), and buy it on DVD.
My point is that this isn't really costing the studios any money, especially when you consider the quality of these early pirated copies.

As of 5/17, the Sith movie torrent floating around is a FAAAAAKKKKE (/DS9 Romulan)! It's a 700mb nfo file and a 450kb mpg. Anti-torrent torrent maybe?

Torrent is indeed a fake. It is part 1 of 2 of some weird movie although I have no idea how it could be extracted from the NFO file. Either way, don't waste your time.
And as for costing anybody money, whoever said people that download it will stay pay to watch it is correct. I want to see it on the big screen but I have no interest in squeezing between two losers in Darth Vadar costumes screaming at the top of their lungs to try to watch it. And I am guessing that would be the case for the first few weeks in about any theater. So, it would be cool to watch it from a torrent. The quality from the torrents lately has been very good and it would be pretty cool to have a copy even though I will see it in the theater eventually, like I am sure most others that would take the time to download a torrent would do as well.
