Ebert believes more Star Wars films will come
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Critical Thought
Roger Ebert believes that George Lucas will make more Star Wars films. In the first sentence of his review, Roger Ebert said Star Wars Episode III is "not necessarily the last of the Star Wars movies." Ebert later explained in an added note, that he believes that the studio will demand more. "Although Lucas has absolutely said he is finished with the series, it
is inconceivable to me that 20th Century-Fox will willingly abandon the
franchise, especially as Lucas has hinted that parts VII, VIII and IX
exist at least in his mind," explained Ebert. "There will be enormous pressure for them to
be made, if not by him, then by his deputies." Star Wars fannatics all around the world suddenly have hope.

What Studio? George Lucas has completely financed every Star Wars film except the first one. He owns it and distributes it through FOX.

So FOX isn't a studio? I'm sure the STUDIO heads that handle the distribution aspects over at FOX would disagree.

The Geroge could make Star Wars movies ad infinitum, and I really wouldn't put it past him. He could do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. Or maybe he'll redo Episodes IV, V, and VI - keep the same script, but take advantage of the new technology available for special effects. He's always bitching about how disappointed in the effects from those 3 movies. The possiblities are endless.

Hmm making more Star Wars movies could well spoil the franchise, isit purely for story purposes or monetary purposes?

The first trilogy was appropriate to the span of time in American history when it came out. Perhaps not obviously so.
So is the second. Obviously so.
I should hope they save the remaining one for another 15 to 20 years from now.

PLEASE...make it stop.
Wait 'till Lucas is dead (let's hope, eh?), then get those really responsible for the classic bits of star wars (including Ebert) together, and try to forget the hurt. And do it RIGHT.

I know this much: if Lucas makes 7-8-9 and it doesn't include Kyle Katarn, I'll be boycotting it. I know the Jedi Knight games aren't officially canon, but they were well-written enough to be and it's definetely something that Lucas should consider.

The Kyle Katarn storyline should NOT be canon. It's weak when compared to other post-ROTJ projects. Did you miss Dark Horse Comics' "Dark Empire" series? Or worse, Timothy Zahn's "Heir to the Empire" trilogy? If anything should get to be canon, it should be those two. Admiral Thrawn would be most worthy of filling in the void left by Darth Vader and DarthSidious/Palpatine.

However, as Ebert has pointed out, the saga was cut short with the changes to Return of the Jedi. Luke wasn't supposed to meet the emperor in his final showdown until the last film, IX. Han Solo would have been killed off in RotJ as well.
Quite what Luke and Han will do for the new three films is anyone's guess now. But whatever story is devised will ultimately feel a little bit tacked on.

Going with the Admiral Thrawn storyline would be good, though the plot holes leaping between the two timeframes would take some long explanations. Palpatine has clones of self; Palpatine clones Luke from his hand; Palpatine sends psycho assassin with his dying command (who just ends up killing the clone and marrying Luke himself); etc. Perhaps not the best as a movie, but still a lot to catch up with.
Unfortunately, there won't be any movies... we get a TV series instead. And it falls *between* the trilogies. So much for continuing plotlines...
As for remaking the earlier three with new technology, they're certainly working on that, but be careful what you wish for... you just might get this:

If there's money to be had, the saga will continue. Future plot could be twisted, reinvented, and extended to accommodate any geek's dream/nightmare.

They WILL be made, eventually.
Copyright lasts a long time, 75 years after the death of the creator or some such, but eventually it will run out, then our grandkids-kids will get who knows how many versions...
For this reason, it would be good for Lucas to at least outline the plots...or eventually, someone else will...

The President of LucasArts Entertainment said "let me dispell the rumor that this is the last Star Wars film" during the end G4's *Icons* program that detailed the history of Star Wars videogames. I watched that clip several times to gather if he had made a mistake in his phrasing, but it seemed legitimate to me....

Its all up to Lucas, if and when he dies, and FOX studio takes controll and trys to either re-make or expand the series..I will of course spend the money to see the film, making them there millions of dollars. But somthing will be lost. How can you expand more on what has already been expanded so much. Its like making a Pulp Fiction 2. maybe that was a bad example but you some of you get what i mean. What would the story be, han solos kids..what kind of immportance would they have. a drug smuggler and a polition have a kid. ha in 20 years that will probably be historicly correct. Luke must start a Jedi Temple, and start training others. But its going to take a Jedi that luke trians to somehow learn the evils of the dark side. and thats just to repettive. anyways the prophecy has been fufiled. ...i want to see The Matrix IV, V and VI. that would be cool

I think that making Star Wars VII, VIII AND IX would just kill off Star Wars. There is nothing more to it. The Emperor died in VI. And so did Darth Vader. And from the films, none of the Empire's generals or officers will really make it up, none of them are well known (at least not in the movies).
