Love 'em or hate 'em, you have to respect Troma Studios. They were independent before it was cool to be independent. And now, legendary independent filmmaker and Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman will be hosting Make Your Own Damn Movie, a five-disc crash course in filmmaking on DVD this month. The set is marketed as being for anyone who has ever wanted to make movies but didn't know how. Using real-life examples from Kaufman's own career, the set will show you how to handle each step in the filmmaking process: from scriptwriting and financing, to marketing and distribution. Also included is an exclusive featurette filmmaking secrets and advice from South Park creators Trey Parker & Matt Stone, horror legend George A. Romero, Rocky and Karate Kid director John G. Avildsen, comic book legend Stan Lee, Cabin Fever director Eli Roth, Hershell Gordon Lewis, WarGames director John Badham, producer Bill Lustig, Phone Booth writer Larry Cohen and many others. The box set also includes examples of Making Your Own Damn Movie from around the world, three feature-length behind-the-scenes documentaries which have been previously released on Troma DVD: Farts of Darkness, Apocalypse Soon and All The Love You Cannes (which focuses more on marketing and distribution).
The DVD also includes a workshop deconstruction edition of Kaufman's 1971 film The Battle of Love's Return with bonus lessons on making your own damn video store, comic book shop, movie theater and film festival. The set is due on May 31st 2005 with a retail MSRP of $49.95. A box set also will be available with the companion book that inspired it the DVD for $69.95.
Will this set make you a good filmmaker? Very unlikely. Will it teach you something? Maybe. Will it at least be entertaining? Definitely.
