Lucas' idea for new Star Wars Prequel?

George Lucas said he was finished with the Star Wars movies. Ebert didn't believe him, Karina didn't get it, but more importantly - WE wanted more. Stupid Us. It seems George Lucas told a scooper that he has an idea for another add-on to the Star Wars movie series: a prequel to The Phantom Menace. The story would follow the Jedi regaining control of the universe from the many Dark Lords some 88 years before Anakin Skywalker ever graced the universe. Yoda, who, according to Lucas, was instrumental in the effort, would apparently have a headlining role. However, Lucas, now age 60, says he won't be captaining such a ship if it ever happens.Click here for a May 27, 2005 UPDATE

Dark lords? I take it they mean Sith but the Sith had been extinct for a thousand years I thought?

I don't doubt that he'll try to continue to milk it for all its worth. The stories are always fun and exciting, but the execution has gone downhill since Empire Strikes Back.

No more SW prequels please! Would be interested however in seeing some subordinate stories like where do Han Solo and Chewbacca meetup between Episode III and IV and perhaps a story following Boba Fett's bounty hunter quests. THere are lots of good stories that could work within the characters Lucas has already presented but please, George, stop going back in time.
One would have thought that the Star Trek franchise was proof of how difficult that is to pull off.

Hmmm... some clarification is needed I think here...
1. Even if Lucas mentioned he had an idea, it is not displayed in any form of print, nor offering anything so he cannot get "sued for false advertising."
2. Clint is almost right, there have been no mass Sith for almost 1000yrs, however there has to be some for balance to be maintained.
3. As for "Milking it", he doesn't need or really want to do that. over $9billion the movies has made for him since Ep.IV so he doesn't financially need it. He wants to do other projects so why would he continue writing stories for it? Yes, after 30yrs you can't easily get something so familiar out of your head, but it doesn't mean he wants to continue. As for the stories going down-hill... watch them again, you definately missed something.
4. Prequels? Actually Ep.I-III are not prequels. Even the original Star Wars movie was entitled "Episode IV" which blatantly states this is not the beginning, so Ep.I is not a prequel. As for a comparrison between SW and ST? It's like comparring the shows "Silverado" and "The Phantom Of The Opera", both of which are great stories, but just different genre's.

What? I thought Lucas was gonna do some sort of animated episode 7-9? Didn't the THX branch of Lucas Arts and Lucasfilm sign on this already? Or am I just falling asleep at my computer and dreaming while reading starwars rumour sites again?

regarding Clint's comments -
The Sith aren't the only users of the dark side of the Force - they're a special group that were around a few thousand yrs ago that perpetuated via a Master/Apprentice relationship, but in the SW Universe, there are Dark Jedi who wouldn't be considered "Sith"
So, It's very possible some Dark Jedi were running things behind the scenes and he may want to tell that story, but it's his to tell - but they wouldn't be Sith Lords - Just plain ol' Jedi.
Sith, BTW, is a term based on a culture of people on Yavin 4 who some Dark Jedi took over and ruled - eventually, those Dark Jedi also became known as Sith, and their population were Sith for awhile, but eventually it became a Race so hellbent on power they all killed each other but one -
then the one rebuilt the Sith as just a Master and an Apprentice - and therefore no more bloodbaths.

Regarding Whiskeytowns comments:
Originaly, Owen and Beru Lars were SUPPOSED to be relatives of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke called them Uncle and Aunt because he did not know they were not blood relatives. But Lucas changed this. Why? Because it suited him.
Leia was supposed to have known her mother... (even if just for a short time, but still longer then Luke) But Lucas changed this also. Once again, he did it because it suited him.
Never if this pre-prequal was to happen, more then likely it would actually be the Sith being eradicated. Why? Because it is a familure story line that everyone would understand making his job easier.
He has taken the liberty to change so many things when ever he wants to, so never assume that one thing is a "sacred truth" when it comes to Lucas.

I would like to see "Revenge of the Ewoks". After years of imperial factories churning out Ewok skin rugs, those fury freaks hatch a plan to spread fleas to the wookies.

Please no more movies from George Lucas. He has done nothing but ruin the franchise ever since he started on episodes I-III. I would love to see star wars, but ONLY if someone - ANYONE - other than George Lucas does the script, the direction, and the production. I seriously thought I was going to die watching episode III.
"You're so... beautiful"
"That's because I'm so in love."
"No, it's because I am so in love with you."
Gag.

Star Wars "Episode IV" never had the tag "Episode IV" in the theate when it came out in 1977. It was not until later did they tag it with "Episode IV"

When Star Wars was re-released in 1982, the opening crawl included the "Episode IV: A New Hope" header.

i'd much rather see something in "the new jedi order" era with luke, kyp, jaina, jacen, and anakin. perhaps about kyp's turning to the dark side and destroying a bunch of stuff then luke saving him. heck i dunno. heh.

I recall that there were two kind of Sith: a race calles Sith and a bunch of others who picked up the Sith ideology. I vaguely remember that the real Sith destoyed themself long before the other group emerged. The fact that the real Sith were long gone didn't stop the newcomers to tap on their knowledge, however, as there was abundance of Sith relics scattered all over the galaxy.

I hate to get into the arguement over who's the biggest nerd, but it wasn't yavin 4 that "some Dark Jedi took over and ruled". what you're talking about is a mix of the founding of the sith and Exar Kun's exploits.
The jedi got into a 'civil war' and split, jedi here, evil-jedi there. the evil jedi were exiled and later landed on a planet (called sith? i don't know...) who's premitive 'people' called themselves sith. after years the dark jedi had taken over the planet and eventually everyone dark jedi or regular inhabitant were called sith etc. etc..
Exar Kun came around later and after falling to the darkside went to Yavin 4 to find some holocrons or some non-sense and enslaved the moon's 'primitive warrior people' or whatever and used them as his personal body-guards/cannon-fodder.
so you were half right.....and i claim the biggest nerd crown

What happened to making 7, 8 & 9? I thought that was the original idea: Make the middle three and end up with a trillogy of trillogies. Which ever way it goes, he needs to make sure that his sticks as the inspirational role, and lets someone else do the writting and directing. I really enjoyed ROTS, but the dialog blew.
"Hold my like you did by the lake on Naboo!" has become a classic catch phrase by the people in my office.
