Kevin Smith defends Hayden Christensen
Last week we passed the meme about how Hayden Christensen was thinking of quitting acting. In an interview, he revealed possible plans to become an architect, in between bashing Hollywood and throwing a snide remark at Orlando Bloom. Now indie-geek director Kevin Smith is defending Christensen on his website. "A few leading questions, and you've got one actor saying something about another actor, and since the journo's questions are rarely included, no one's the wiser about who first invoked the Elf," said Smith. "I think you're being awfully hard on this guy, who didn't even say he
was quitting the biz; he simply said he'd rather study architecture
instead of Hollywood." On his message board, Smith "speaking as someone who's been on the business end of a journo's microphone many a time" showed how how he imagines that response could've been arrived at:Journo: What's it like being a player in Hollywood
HC: I don't find Hollywood interesting, so I'm thinking about studying architecture instead.
Journo: You feel Hollywood is too commercial?
HC: A film is a product and as an actor, you can only sell it to sell yourself.
Journo: But look at Orlando Bloom - he's been successful on his own terms. Are you saying he has no integrity?
HC: You don't get to sit at the table before you're ready to give away you're integrity. Maybe it works for ORLANDO BLOOM. It doesn't work for me.

After reading the actual interview the whole thing makes a lot more sense. But truthfully I'm not that concerned with whether Hayden Christensen quits acting or not. This is Hayden's business, not mine. I would be sad, because this young man can certainly act. Leaving Star Wars out of the equation, his performances in "Life as a House" and "Shatterglass" both prove that he has talent, talent that will grow and mature. His acting for Star Wars is under major debate. I for one feel that he did a fine job, he did exactly what the director asked of him. His performance in Revenge of the Sith, shows that he how much he was hindered in Attack of the Clones. In Sith he shines, tortured and bedeviled by his own inner demons.
I say good luck Hayden and if this is the end of your career, well you couldn't have gone out on a better note!

I remember before FOTR came out the was a Peter Jackson quote floating around in which he was trashing Star Wars.
People jumped on it from both sides, then it turned out that the quote was pretty much completely untrue.
In the DVD specials, Jackson specificially praised Rick McCallum and George Lucas (mostly for assisting with pre-viz planning) - something he absolutely didn't have to do.
Celeb gossip, especially in print should be taken with at least a small grain of salt.

No one is taking this issue serious. Hayden is already filming another movie and have several movies in the pipeline. I really believe his comment was taken out of context. No one believes he made this comment because it's coming from the Sun. The only media that is printing and believing this garbage is gossip and trashing sites.

It is unfortunate that so much "talking junk" about people goes on in life and when someone is a public figure they just have that many more people talking junk. It doesn't seem to me that he actually says he's quitting acting anywhere, nor do I think he is dissing Orlando Bloom. He is right in that what works for one person may not be right for another. We are all individuals. What I get from the interview is simply that he hasn't been won over by the whole Hollywood lifestyle and wants to keep his options in life open. If you ask me, that is a pretty healthy attitude.

When I saw that Hayden might quit acting, my heart jumped! Your comments all make sense, though. We all have to dig deeper sometime and I think Hayden is probably a deep thinker. He reminds me of James Dean a little. I think it would be incredible to get him and Scarlett Johannsen together, on or off set! What beautiful people! I think we have a new stlye of actor here...one that can pull at our souls when we watch him. I know he's got me totally hooked! I love him!
