Penn joins Joker casting speculation
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Casting, Warner Brothers, Geek Report
Friday we reported that Paul Bettany had emerged as a surprise contender for the role of The Joker in the sequel to Batman Begins. Well according to Aint it Cool News, a drunken Christian Bale revealed to Now magazine that Chris Nolan is currently courting Sean Penn to play the Joker in Batman Begins 2, Batman Continues, or whatever they decide to call it. "However there's still some finessing to do because Sean's apparently unsure about 'taking' his buddy, Jack Nicholson's, role", says a scooper for the site. So right now there are four contenders in the Joker casting rumor mill: Crispin Glover, Lachy Hulme, Paul Bettany and now Penn. What do you guys think of this new choice? Personally I think Penn can do no wrong, but I'd much prefer Crispin Glover.

I would think the person who plays the Joker should have a sense of humor. Sean Penn doesn't qualify.

I would love to see Christopher Walken as the Joker. I think he has the chops to pull it off. I mean just close your eyes for a second and imagine him with all the makeup on, now add his voice in and his trademark humor and you have got a near perfect yet highly original joker.

the joker needs to be younger than Penn if you ask me.
We have a young batman, we need a young joker.
Paul Bettany would be good, so would Crispin Glover, not so much Lachy Hulme, I don't think he has the right look.
And Penn does have a sense of humor, he just hasn't used it in a long time, just watch "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".

The Joker is supposed to be a lanky, criminal genius with a deadly sense of humour.
Jack Nicholson played him like a bufoon.
I'd go for Jeff Goldblum. He's tall, he's got the grin, and he can do malevolent.
Sam Rockwell would be good too.

Absolutely right.
It's also imperative that The Joker should look like someone who can eat more than one french fry, at a time. Penn has this miniscule little mouth...which, admittedly, does not prevent him from making a disproportionate amount of noise.

Sean Penn? C'mon?! The only thing positive he would be able to bring to the role would be MALEVOLENCE which IMO is a REQUIREMENT for the job!
But there are other actors who can do this. Their names will not crowd the movie. And they will be able to add so much more...
For example, Lachy Hulme would be my choice for the purely, John Wayne Gacy-esqe, homicidical maniac Joker portrayal. Check his work in 4 Jacks.
Similarly, Paul Bettany would be my choice to portray the dapper lunatic, sophisticated yet still psychopathic, a mad-genius kind of Joker - e.g. Mark Hamill's Joker from JL or BTAS.
But all that said, my FIRST CHOICE IS CHRIS ECCLESSTON!!! He can be as dapper, witty & cunning as Bettany and as vicious, ruthless and pyschopathic as Hulme - Also, he looks the closest to the Joker in light make-up than the previous 2... although they would all look pretty good.
Any of these 3 could do it - I just think Ecclesston would be able to provide a more (for lack of a better word) "balanced" portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime.
