King Kong backlash
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Universal, RumorMonger, Fandom, Trailer Trash

Has the King Kong trailer got you down? Well you're not the only one. It seems like everyone is disappointed with the CGI displayed in the trailer. So much so that it appears (read: speculation) that Universal is doing spin control releasing two high resolution images of Kong and the T-Rex through Ain't It Cool News.
Harry Knowles blames the bad CGI on the low resolution of television and Quicktime video. This is a first. I've seen many trailers on television and online and have never before came to this conclusion. I hate to make accusations, so I won't - but I think Knowles' fan boy relationship with Peter Jackson is well documented online. I think the trailer speaks for itself -- as it should. It's ridiculous for Harry to tell us that we didn't see what we just saw.

Maybe I'm blind, but the high res shots and the trailer didn't look bad. Is there something I missed???

EVERYONE was disappointed with it? Uh, I sure wasn't. I don't think you're speaking for EVERYONE here, Peter.

I thought the trailer looked pretty damn good. I'm not looking for photo-super-realism in a movie such as this, a dramatic actor; I'm looking to be entertained. Jack Black? Prefect as an eccentric movie director who picks someone off the street to go to an uncharted island to full a movie.
A gigantic ape versus a T-Rex? Neither of which existed at all together, and people want realism!? How so?
The trailer looks pretty damn good, and the movie shall be entertaining.
Remember, I believe people poo-pooed Elijah Woods as Frodo at first before the movie came out.

I can't help but remember Marty MCFly in BTTF2 saying "Shark still looks fake."

if you're looking for realism in giant gorillas and pre-historic animals i think you may be looking in the wrong place. I liked the trailer and don't think people should judge until the final product is seen.

All I know is that after visiting kongisking.net every week, watching every production diary video, and then tivo'ing the trailer on NBC my gut initial reaction to the movie I have been looking forward to since it was announced was "that looked HORRIBLE!"
I hated the trailer and the CG. I think the "low resolution" argument is garbage since none of the LOTR trailers ever looked so shiny and fake. It looks like something that would air on Sci-Fi.
My fingers remain crossed that the film gets fixed before release.

Captian SkyHawk was an entire movie revolving around unrealistic looks and design. Apples to Oranges, I know. I think Kong looks fine. Don't spin anything, let the movie goers decide for themselves.

this is a work in progress. Compositors (2d people who finish the look) are only being recruited now so there is still a long way to go before any of the shots are finaled.

boys boys boys, no need to worry. peter jackson has already stated in new zealand media newspapers that they still have not finalised how long king kongs hair will be. so if this is the case you can be damn sure they have not started outputting all the final cgi frames.
personally i believe that jackson would not put all his cards on the table with a teaser trailer. with every new trailer release his goal is to blow away your expectations.
i think this trailer was simply released to show people that this project is happening and that the story looks good.
