Wonka's Wild about Johnny Depp
Filed under: Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Casting, Warner Brothers, Celebrities and Controversy, Family Films
Back in early June we told you that Gene Wilder wasn't wild about Wonka: "I like Johnny Depp, and I appreciate that he has said on record that my shoes will be hard to fill. But I don't know how it will all turn out."Well, his tune has changed a little. Now he's telling the MRIB: "If I were going to cast the movie I would cast Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka because I think he is wonderful. Mysterious - always - and magical."
Casting aside, Wilder is still cynical about the motives behind the new movie: "It used to be that they were almost as concerned with making a good film as a money maker. Today the money making comes first."
With the current state of the box office, he may have a good point.

I think that Mr.Gene Wilder Has a major point. I love Johnny Depp. But the thing is that maybe all there is to this movie business is making money. Personally I think that he is one of the best actors of all time. He makes whatever movie he is in absolutly magical.

I am looking forward to the Johnny Depp portray of Willy Wonka. He has so much scope and depth and originality. He brings to the screen a purity and talent that makes him a joy to watch. He is able to do drama and comedy in equal measure.
He is also a pure artist who takes risks in order to create original and layered characters. But there is never any sense of ego to his work.
Tim Burtin's films are incredible and I am looking forward to seeing this partnership's next masterpiece.

I agree that remaking the movie is mostly about money, as there really is no need to remake the movie. But Tim Burton + Johnny Depp always = perfection and a brilliant movie.

I was rather amused when i first heard that Gene wilder was 'less than impressed' about the whole remake of 'Charlie &the chocolate factory' seems to me that he was concerned about his "thunder being stole" LOL

I have seen the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and I can proudly say that I walked out of the movie theater with a huge smile. This movie, which was not a remake by the way, was very different than the original. It was better. Johnny Depp is the most versatile actor I have ever seen on screen. In this movie he is incredibly eccentric with a wicked sense of humor. Johnny Depp has shown the world a different side of Willy Wonka. A side that I believe Gene Wilder could not show. I encourage anyone that has an imagination and a love for chocolate to see this movie. This movie is the new classic.

I think Johnny did a very well and incredible Willy Wonka. I would consider him for any role like that. He has the eccentricities, the incredible sense of finding what a character needs and puts that amusement onto the screen. Congrats Johnny! Once again you have amazed everyone with only one more of your amazing performances! Great job as Willy Wonka!
