Bewitched has hepatitis C, everyone stay away!
Filed under: Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand
You can't make any jokes now-a-days without pissing someone off. A joke made in the recent Bewitched film adaptation is drumming up some angry comments from the M&C and the American Liver Foundation. TheMovieBlog describes the scene: "Person A is hitting on Person B, but Person C (who is a witch) likes Person A and uses their powers to make Person B tell Person A that they have Hepatitis C. Laughs ensue.""Tragically, this remarkably tasteless comment plays into the stigma that many people with hepatitis C have to cope with every single day," Frederick G. Thompson, president and chief executive officer of the American Liver Foundation, said in a statement.
So what do you guys think, does a joke like this go too far?

I feel that if that joke truly is in bad taste. If you changed the word "hepatitus C" to the "AIDS virus", people would be outraged. This is not a laughing matter. Jokes at the expense of a deadly illness is poor, poor, poor. Humor at any expense is bad.

Definitely BAD taste!
I agree with the suggestion of the joke being considered inappropriate and much more upsetting if it were made about HIV/AIDS instead. In my opinion, this is because most people are generally aware of the horrible effects of HIV/AIDS, especially since the lives of so many people have been affected by it. AIDS is well known to the public and to those who are infected or have infected friends/relatives, it is obvious that it is not a joke.
It is fair to assume that anyone who IS educated about hepatitis C would not find a joke like this to be funny at all. However, unlike AIDS, many people whose lives have not been directly affected by hepatitis C are not educated about it or aware of the seriousness attached to it. Jokes like these are truly aimed at these people, and these folks are EXACTLY the ones who should be educated first before hearing jokes like this.

The joke doesn't go far enough, it's not all that funny. Maybe changing the punchline to have person A get AIDS would been better.

As a person who has Hepatitis C, I found the joke inappropriate and in bad taste. It did not personally hurt me because I have known for 6 years that I have it and have educated myself regarding the means of transmission, etc.. However, for those who are newly diagnosed and unfamiliar with the means of transmission and the prognosis, it is no laughing matter. In fact, it is very frightening and to have people make a joke and laugh about it is actually humiliating. Also, for those who are clueless about Hepatitis C, it gives the wrong connotation. Until the public has been very well educated regarding Hepatitis C - and until the movie producers have actually been touched by it within their own families and/or eductated themselves about it , they should refrain from such "jokes"!
Thank goodness we have a foundation who stands up for us. Hats off to the American Liver Foundation!!!

Trying to get a laugh by commenting on a chronic disease is not funny by any means, nor would it be funny to replace Hepatitis C with saying they have AIDS. NOT funny!! Lice would be funny. It is curable and does not offend anyone. Hepatitis C is a terrible disease that effects and kills thousands of people in the USA annually. The only treatment is toxic, gives horrific side effects and only 50% can cure. Other than that, there is liver failure, transplant if a liver is available and if not death!! Now that really is NOT funny. You people that have posted you don't care.....well, go have a blood test, there are no symptons, maybe you have it, then you will see how life changing it is and then maybe you will care!!! How insensitive can people be these days!!! It is truly pathetic!!

I saw the movie, and that wasn't a very funny moment taken by itself, but was mildly funny as part of a sort of running gag. But, to be offended by it seems a little over the top. It's a disease that can be transmitted sexually. If you were a witch, and someone you liked was talking to a very attractive person, and you could make them say something to make the person you liked lose interest in sexual contact with said attractive person, what would you have that person say? Maybe all those who are offended should see it more as a warning against permiscuity?

Okay - this is just beyond retarded... No, it's not funny to make a joke about people with Hep-C, just like it's not funny to make jokes about people with any life threatening disease. If you or someone you know has had to go thru treatment for it (or worse died from it), you know it's not a bowl of cherries, by any stretch.
But honestly, this is just a perfect example of why the Ephron sisters should:
a) Never be allowed to come near a script or a film, ever.
b) Stick to their own brand of crappy, outdated schlock, without trying to "stay hip with the kids".
Please someone put them out of their out of their misery and save us from the lame-ass jokes.

Tony, Get your facts straight before you comment. Hepatitis C is NOT a STD. It is NOT transmitted sexually. It is transmitted blood to blood only. Your comments are precicely the reason the hep C communtity is concerned. Educate yourself before you comment on something this serious in the future. Denise

I contracted hepatitis C from a blood transfusion 20 Years ago. Numerous studies indicate that hepatitis C, unlike hepatitis B, is not transmitted sexually. Hepatitis B is transmitted sexually, hepatitis C is transmitted by contact with infected blood.

Diane:
" Hepatitis C
What Increases Your Risk
Certain factors may increase your risk of becoming infected with the virus that causes hepatitis C.
Risk factors you can control
* Sharing needles and other equipment (such as cotton, spoons, and water) used to inject or take drugs
* Having multiple sex partners or having unprotected sex with someone who has many sex partners. The risk is even higher if you are infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or HIV.
* Having sex with a partner who has HCV infection. While long-term spouses of people who have ongoing (chronic) HCV infection have a low risk of infection, the risk is still not zero."

Anyone that makes fun of people who are disabled period with or without a life taking disease are heartless.
HCV is projected to kill more people in the next 20 yrs than AIDS has since its discovery. HCV will touch everyones life in one way or another.
HCV is an epidemic and everyone should be concerned and get tested.

I would like to commend my brothers and sisters who have stated the facts so tactfully in regards to this curse called Hep C. As I read some of these replies I sit here and shake my head in dis-belief I am a manager on a Hep C forum and have treated 5 times with no SVR . I have had the oppotunity to be exposed to many people infected on the boards. Many lives have been ruined by this disease and the stigma placed on them is not fair, does the public realize how many Viet Namn vets have been infected with blood transfusions because of War injuries. They fought a War that no one approved of were shamed and later in thier lives became ill with this only to have to fight another battle latter in thier life. Do they think this is a joke , I don't think so. And every time I take an injection of this poison to keep me alive and become deathly sick I don't think it is very funny nor do those who love me and have to endure this suffering. Shame on the ignorance of others.

Six thousand people take part in a study group to see how they aquired Hepatitis C. Two hundred of those people had no clue as to how they aquired hepatitis C. The good people at the center for disease control figure... let's cover our posteriors and say Hepatitis C can be sexually transmitted. Now it has been spoken, and now the fearful, ignorant and gullible believe.

Every day thousands of people choose to have sex in order to have a child. Many of these people are completely aware that their child will likely have a disease and or an illness which could be life threatening, or in the very least, life altering. These illnesses and diseases include many forms of Mental Illness, and physical illnesses and diseases such as Crohn's Disease, Heart Disease, and on and on. Why is this acceptable? Where is the joke in that?
