Fletch Won hits a snag

Filed under: Comedy, Casting, The Weinstein Co., Weinstein Brothers

Just when we though the big screen adaptation of Fletch Won was about to go into pre-production, it looks like development has hit a snag: "We’re kind of at an impasse with the flick, inasmuch as I see the flick as more of a straight adaptation of the book, and Harvey and the producer David List seem to want to make something closer to the Chevy Chase version, with more sight gags and disguises." writer/director Kevin Smith wrote in his online journal.

Smith promised Harvey Weinstein another draft of the script by the end of his current shoot on Catch and Release, but after re-reading the script, he decided that there’s nothing he wanted to change.

A few years back Smith pushed and pushed to cast friend Jason Lee in the role, but was told he wasn't a bankable star. Smith has since moved on, meeting with Garden State's Zach Braff, who he was set to cast as Fletch. But it seems Weinstein wants to go in another direction, with Chris Tucker in the lead role. Smith says he doesn't have much interest in  making that version of Fletch Won: "Now we’re at a point at which Harvey and I aren’t even on the same page in terms of tone or story-flow."

So he passed the script in as is and noted: "If they want to go another way, without me, I’ll understand."
