Box Office Slump? Blame it on those pinko liberals
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Box Office, Scripts
In an article (actually, more of a rant-icle) in yesterday's Los Angeles Times Calendar section, Govindini Murty - "actress, screenwriter and co-director of the [conservative] Liberty Film Festival" - has some advice for "Hollywood's ruling liberal elites", in regards to ending the much-bickered-over box office slump. "Hollywood could turn things around," Murty writes, "but that might mean tolerating films with pro-conservative themes." Murty contends that whilst "liberals are out of ideas and have to resort to endless sequels and remakes," she and other conservative friends with "new ideas aren't allowed into the mix." She backs this latter claim up by relating a script note she recieved on a project about "the realities of Islamo-fascism" with jaw-to-the-floor incredulity: "[C]reative executives ... wanted us to 'explain the terrorists' motivations more.'" So is Murty an innocent victim of a widespread ideological blacklist? Or could she just have maybe written a better script?

I want whatever Murty is smoking.
Anywho - I don't think a 'better script' would have done anything. I'd think it would be more that producers are afraid of offending or perhaps even alienating certain audiences than anything else. Besides, examining the motives of terrorism seems more like a liberal project than a conservative project, I must admit.

Actually if you watch the bad guys in The Siege, and in Black Hawk Down, and in every Die Hard movie, they do need to explain themselves. It is the bond bad guy monologue thing. It has to happen, you can't just hate people for no reason. However dumb that reason may be. But, yes to there is a long written about history of hollywood being, well, not so pro conservative when it comes to filmmaking decisions. But, it isn't as if I can even get one religious bookstore to hire me, (I just didn't get the concept of an entire bookstore devoted to one book). I couldn't even get a job at Victoria Secret. There is a certain descriminaton factor that comes into hiring and working with people when it comes to socially sensitive situations. There are a great many republicans in hollywood, they just don't run around speaking out too much. Hollywood is about being cool. The people that speak at republican political rallies are not cool. They are country singers.

I just think that conservatives have an agenda all the time. Liberals(democrats and others) Arent pushing an agenda with movies, they are merely trying to push their viewpoints on a subject, and see if it sells. Mostly just for entertainment purposes. The Liberal "elite" in hollywood is happy with open minded viewpoints, expressionism, pushing the envelope. Elite? yeah... have you seen the bonuses and pay packages for the Wall street money takers for golfing all week, then mixing up some plans to screw people over for their own benefit that are being investigated for fraud? These guys are control freaks and Tyrants.... and people consider a big star with an attitude to be a pain? lol, if i dont like their movie, they only screwed me out of 9 bucks and two hours... if i get hammered by a fraudulent business, i may lose my retirement. These Movie stars, are paid big bucks like athletes to entertain us. And its directly from merchandising and ticket sales. The problem is when you have "conservative" hypocrites telling everyone its not fair that they dont get to put out as entertainment, their propaganda crap to support people who grease palms, and get away with illegal actions all day- using our tax money, telling everyone that screwing people over all day is for the christian revolution. - Thats not real conservatism, its crap from greedy liars. A real conservative, would make a movie about the strife and trouble going on in the poor areas of the country where unemployment is high and lost jobs become wal-mart employees, and insurance companies run rampant with blessing, and why this is ok with the current federal goverment. The liberals in Hollywood are not the issue nor the problem, its losers like this chick who says "new ideas arent allowed into the mix", she is part of the "crusade" against all non-GOP members claiming to be part of some christian group with the same views. Literally, they are on a real crusade, where killing and eye for an eye supercede the rights and guidance our constitution was created for. Its all about consolidating power and money in the hands of the old boys club. They let a couple tokens in as long as they play ball.
Its a good thing that this chick is being rejected for her dumb propaganda script. We dont need more Fox News bias. The Mainstream media isnt biased like them.. its their job to find out all the political crap going on and its just a fact that there is so much happening illegally in our current political control atmosphere that they are reporting. I think they are actually caving into the criticisms that people like this woman is claiming about the Hollywood liberals. The fact is that of the moviegoing populace, sex, violence, and fantasy sells. If christian-only movies sold to the "majority christian" populace, then they would be selling them.. money talks. The facts are obvious, if the hypocrites wants to be inundated with movies about christians, or their viewpoints, they would buy tickets, but they dont, they just push it for political gain. Your average "christian family" will likely have seen War of the worlds, fantastic 4, Star Wars III, you name it. putting their family of 4 or 5's money into those movies. They also go pay the tickets to sit and watch athletes get 8 million a year to play games. Its a fact. Entertainers and the ringleaders, dont deserve to be criticized for doing what makes money the most, from the same groups that watch the entertainment, even if its on video a year later in the anonymity of their own home. If you want to criticize an elite group for the bad things they do, criticize the CEOs and their cronies getting billions to screw people, other businesses, and the government over while donating to the GOP for making new laws to make them more money. (I dont think the oil industry needed that recent 22 billion dollar feeding from congress, they are rolling in our money already, isnt research what profits are for? ) There! i ranted back against the unstoppable machine for the liberal elites in hollywood. Take that Murty.

I had no idea that a two-hour long spectacle of grisly violent torture would be held up as an example of a film with "pro-conservative themes." Does that make Rob Zombie's House of the Dead a conservative Citizen Kane? Oh wait, sorry, I forgot -- that flesh is being flayed off of the back of Jesus, so I guess that makes it OK.
It's no great revelation that Hollywood is averse to putting out pro-conservative movies. But can anyone really think of a _good_ movie with pro-conservative values? Ten Commandments is not an especially good film. Passion of the Christ is a bloodbath. I suppose True Lies, which features Islamic terrorist enemies, was pretty entertaining, although I don't know if that alone qualifies it as a pro-conservative film.
Anyway, don't most romantic comedies released by major studios implicitly carry pro-conservative values? Conservative viewpoints on gender run rampant in these kinds of films, since the suggestion is that girls always want to get married. Sure, some women may be more independent than others, depending on the film, but in the end the female lead needs to get hitched to validate herself. You rarely see stories where the woman decides that, hey, she doesn't need to be married to be happy.

Okay, I read this in the paper yesterday, and I was amazed at how ignorant Mrs. Murty is! I consider myself conservative (not religious, and there is a distinction). An example of her ignorance: when talking about "War of the Worlds" she questions screenwriter David Keopp's belief of American guilt of anti-Muslim paranoia after 9/11. She then says, "A question to Koepp: Were we too 'paranoid' after Pearl Harbor too?" I wonder if Mrs. Murty is aware of the internment camps that we placed Japanese citizens in during World War II.
Secondly, the film industry did not "go out of its way to snub 'The Passion of the Christ' at award shows because of its perceived conservatism." I believe it was nominated for two Academy Awards (cinematrography, score, and make-up) the two it deserved. Remember that "Faranheit 9/11" didn't get one nomination (Not that it deserved it).
Most people are aware that the box-office slump has more to do with bad movies (remakes, sequels, and comic book adaptations) than with a liberal agenda. Even if this were the case, if there's anything that speaks to executives more than politics, it's money. What we really don't need are people like Govindini Murty trying to "save the movie industry."

Hmhmm, Thelma and Louise.
Hollywood is a business. The corporation's agenda is money, not politics. As seen by the wave of direct to video godly titles post-Passion. It's just simple customer service, give the customers what they want. The "box office slump" is a blame game. If you don't like something, then blame it for poor ticket sales.

For kicks, I decided to read this article, here's a quote I came away with...
"A question to Koepp: Were we "paranoid" after Pearl Harbor too?"
Uh, yeah, we were, we put all of our citizens of Japaneese origin in camps for years and years for no reason. I call that paranoid.

Enough already! Fantastic 4, War of the Worlds, Batman, Bewitched, Herbie, Star Wars. Hollywood complains about dwindling ticket sales. Been there, done that. Remakes of movies and re-treads of old television shows only lead to general disappointment and increased disinterest. MommyCool.com wants to know where the good new release family movies are? Any hints?

I don't think the question is if she could've written a better script. I wonder if she could possibly have written anything worse than what's out there lately. I myself do get annoyed at the overall business = villain simplicity in a lot of movies, but that's just me.
I don't care who writes the thing so much as I care whether it stinks or not. Right now, most movies stink, and often stink without bothering to come up with at least a new stinky idea and just remake an old stinker. Surprise surprise, box office is down.
