John Moore Remakes "The Omen"
Filed under: Horror, 20th Century Fox
The Omen is being remade? Variety recently reported that John Moore is slated to direct what is now being called Omen 666, an updated version of the 1976 classic that starred Gregory Peck as the stubborn victim of a child-sized antichrist. That original pic was one of those rare pre-80's horror films that was so tastefully made it could hardly be compared to the gore-fests of the years to follow. The director has a difficult task ahead of him. I can't imagine the subtleties of Richard Donner's '76 epic being upheld by a director who is known for flubbing previous remake attempts ala Flight of the Phoenix. But then again, the concept of a remake seems antithetical most of the time. I'd be curious to hear your opinions on remakes. Which ones do you feel have been successful and worthwhile?

Arguably the best remake of all time: The Maltese Falcon (1941), screenplay and direction by John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart. This was version three of Hammett's novel.
Honorable mentions: Martin Scorcese's version of The Age of Innocence (v. 3)
Hitchcock's remake of his own Man who Knew too Much

I think the original movie was/is fantastic. It centered on the people, not the gore. I don't understand why Hollywood has fallen into this "remake fettish", but they should leave well enough alone.
Is there ANYONE in Hollywood with an original idea anymore?
Oh yeah, Joss Whedon has one coming out on September 30th called "Serenity". I think I will miss any remake of "The Omen" thank you very much.
