Connery blames film absence on idiots
Sean Connery turned down the role of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy because he didn't understand the plot, despite reading the books and the script. I can empathize with Connery, as I was only able to make it about halfway through the books before shelving them, as they seemed to consist of lots of running, hiding, and unnecessarily lengthy descriptions of clouds and trees. Connery concedes that Lord of the Rings wasn't a bad flick, but he's still considering not making more movies, blaming "idiot" movie moguls. "I'm fed up with the idiots - the ever-widening gap between people who know how to make movies and the people who green-light the movies."

Not to mention The Avengers. I wonder if anyone's asked Sean if he understood the part about the teddy bear suits...

I like Connery, and he is by far the best Bond. But did you know he also passed on the at least two Matrix films as well. Claims the same reason (didn't understand) And I don't fault him there. Also said that he had trouble with science fiction fantasy stuff like that. But what about the Highlander films then, Sean?
So after passing on those two big blockbuster series, he takes a chance on another film he didn't understand (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) now I enjoyed that (although I would agree that it could have been better) and it flopped.
Connery is right about idiots in Hollywood, but he shouldn't stop making films. He's a good actor, even when he doesn't understand what's going on!
