To come out or not come out in Hollywood
Ian says it's great, but Rupert isn't so sure. What exactly? Coming out as gay or lesbian in Hollywood. Ian McKellen claims his career took off when he announced to everyone without gaydar that he was in fact a homosexual. Rupert Everett, however, doesn't think Hollywood is quite as accepting just yet. He claims he was unable to reach the "next stage" of his career after he came out. Having heard these arguments from both actors, I wonder how much being gay really had to do with their career arcs. It seems McKellen, right or wrong, is simply getting better roles than Everett, and I'm not entirely sure how significant sexual preference is in this particular instance.

I wonder if their age difference doesn't play a factor in this. Ian McKellen is well past the age where he'd be expected to trade on his looks and masculinity in a role (leaving him as the villain, or the asexual English gentlemen, or the harmless wizard, or the queen), whereas Rupert Everett came out right at the point when someone as good-looking as him would be expected to trade on their sex appeal, no?
Not to say that someone like Rupert would have ever gone the action star route, but we didn't/don't see him in any heterosexual leading man role - even in something along the lines of, say, Cemetery Man. And I wonder if his coming out had anything to do with that.
