Fox's No-D'oh! Simpsons Solution
Filed under: New on DVD, 20th Century Fox, Home Entertainment
While a feature-length Simpsons movie is still a couple of years off, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment continues to release full seasons of the Emmy-winning show. This month, they have reached out to obsessive completists in an amusing and characteristic way. When Fox released the 4-disc, Region 1 Season 6 set on August 16th in a molded plastic Homer's head-shaped box, they included a pre-emptive pull-out that directed panicky DVD collectors as to what to do if the new packaging concept caused them some anxiety. "For all those anal-retentive nerds who like their DVD boxes to line up perfectly on the shelf," it reads, followed by an 800-number. They have since added a website, in which they ask collectors their reason for ordering the free (plus shipping) "very derivative, old-style, just-like-before box with almost nothing new or creative to annoy or terrify you.":*Anal retentive (box must be identical)
*Lonely (will pretend box is new best friend)
*Will sell box to collector nerds for huge profit
*Just like free stuff
*Big baby
DVD nuts, which one are you? How do you organize your vast collections? Do you ever loan out your DVD's, or are you like me, constantly in fear that someone will mess your shiznit up?

We have all 384 titles (five hundred-plus discs) in two large binder books and use Movie Collectorz database (http://collectorz.com/movie/) to keep track of everything. The cases and box inserts are kept in basement storage for the inevitable day we sell the whole lot (just like we did with all our VHS tapes).
We have Disc Hubs for temporary storage (http://www.engadget.com/entry/8142716625193573/) near both of our entertainment centers.

For my 350+ title DVD collection, I have all of my movies loaded into my Sony 300-disc DVD changer. The on-screen menus organize your titles alphabetically, by number or by genre.
All of my anime, TV shows and other discs are stored in their cases (until I spring for a newer 400-disc changer). I have two 180-capacity DVD cabinets that I use to store my full/empty DVD cases. I also have a wall-mounted shelf above my TV where I display my collection of Friends and Smallville season sets.
I have my collection catalogued on www.dvdaf.com, and if anyone wants to borrow a movie of mine, I simply point them to my online collection so they can browse easily.
