Dazed and Confused

The Austin film scene is hopping this week with film festivals, free movies, and a number of screenings to benefit worthy causes. If you're not in Austin, you can catch a glimpse of the local film scene in Making Dazed, a documentary about the tenth anniversary of Dazed and Confused airing on AMC on Sunday, Sept. 18. See Richard Linklater, Parker Posey, Ben Affleck, and Matthew McConaughey then and now.

Austin film festivals:
  • QT-6 draws to a close this weekend with a grindhouse triple-feature on Friday night and a lineup of audience favorites from the festival on Saturday night. I keep hearing that you have to get in line pretty early (say, 4 pm) to get tickets for the first showings of the night, but it might be easier to get into late-night screenings.
  • Not a film festival, but perhaps a festival of camp all its own: Alamo Downtown is cranking its programming back up post-Tarantino with a new Sinus show on Sept. 22-24. This time, the guys have fun with KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park.
  • Cinematexas 10, the international short film festival, is underway through Sept. 18. This week's Austin Chronicle includes a preview of some of the shorts.
  • The Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival (aGLIFF) still needs volunteers to work during the 2005 festival, which takes place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 8.
 Free screenings:
  • A new local "film collective" called the Union Cinematheque is sponsoring a free screening of a 35mm Cinemascope print of The 400 Blows at the Texas Union Theatre on Monday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 pm.
  • Scion (yes, the car company) has been sponsoring a film series called Route05 that highlights up-and-coming filmmakers. The travelling series is in Austin this month and will show the End of the Century, the 2003 documentary about The Ramones, on Sept. 20 followed by a Q&A with director Michael Gramaglia. Admission is free but you must RSVP here.
Benefit events:
  • Alamo Village has planned a dinner-and-movie event on Sept. 20-21 with proceeds going Red Cross fund for Hurricane Katrina relief. Admission gets you into a screening of The Big Easy accompanied by a three-course New Orleans-style menu including BBQ shrimp, gumbo, and beignets. Note to Alamo: you might want to fix your menu—it's not "Cafe Ole", it's cafe au lait.
  • If you want to help the four-legged survivors of Katrina, Jo's Hot Coffee is screening the 2003 documentary All on a Mardi Gras Day on Sept. 16 (tonight) at 8:30 pm. The event will also include live music, and rumor has it that one of the Nevilles may be around for the fun. Bring non-food donations for pets or cash donations for the Humane Society.
  • Regal Cinema theaters in Austin are offering free admission and popcorn to movies on Sept. 22 if you bring three cans of food. The food all goes to the Capital Area Food Bank.
