Spider-Man 3 Villains: it's Official
Filed under: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Casting, Newsstand
Thomas Haden Church, once rumored to be playing Chameleon in Spider-Man 3, will in fact play Sandman, and Topher Grace will be Venom. Since this news comes to us straight from the loose lips of Kirsten Dunst herself (who is wisely riding this money train as long as she can), I think we can put the rumor mill to bed on this one.For those of you who, like me, are sadly unfamiliar with all of Spidey's enemies, Sandman is "a career criminal whose irradiated body can turn into a sand-like substance." Sand-like, huh? I was hoping he just had, like, a really abrasive personality, or something. Damn. Venon, however, is a bit more complicated. As far as I can tell, he's (it's?) some sort of alien thing that takes over bodies. When he moves into the body of Eddie Brock, a guy who really, really hates Spiderman already, Venom makes him stronger and more pissed off, "creating a supervillain that looks like a black-and-white version of Spider-Man with a wicked smile." Well that sounds sort of awesome. Maybe it'll help me to forget the crap that was Spider-Man 2 - check back with me when it's released in Spring 2007 and I'll let you know.

Huh so are you saying Spawn kicked ass or something? Howzabout Hulk- that was really getting it done too.

Oh you are wilding! Spider-Man 2 was good! These two films have been pretty solid examples for the genre. Hopefully this 3rd one will too.

Now if they would only get rid of Kirsten Dunst. She sucks, just as much as Katie Holmes sucked in Batman...

Wasn't Eddie Brock name-checked in the first film?

I am a little worried about the 2 villian thing(batman memories) but I am sure they will handle it. I could see something where Venom spreads into two films. I am bummed Danny Elfman is gone from the core though.

I thought Spiderman 2 was good. I would like to know why you didint like it though.
Oh and to take on how to handle the more that one character. I think either Sandman will play a bit role as a villain. (hes in the opening act and gets stomped by spiderman the end) or Mabe they will go with a modified Syndicate Six route. hmmmmmmm cant wait

I'm hoping that they come up with a symbiote storyline that goes something like this:
Peter somehow gets involved with the symbiote/suit
Sandman starts wreaking havok
Somewhere along the line Spidey realizes that the suit is alive and trying to control him. Cue Topher Grace as the voice of a (wiseass) cg symbiote suite.
Fighting Sandman is difficult because Spidey is also fighting the symbiote
The hero wins.
The symbiote teams up with Eddie Brock in the last scene and decide to kick Peter/Spidey's ass in the next sequel.

Eddie Brock is a journalist at the Daily Bugle, working on getting a story on Spider-Man. He gets upset that Peter Parker keeps getting all the "exclusives", so he becomes embittered, eventually hating Peter Parker. (Venom origin, stage 1)
Then, after Parker's adventures with the alien symbiote, or the "Black Costume", he gets rid of it with the help of the Fantastic Four and their awesome Sonic Cannon. The symbiote, being a living, sentient creature, begins to hate Peter Parker. (Venon origin, stage 2)
Eddie Brock, in a despondent state, goes to a local church, where - somehow - the symbiote has escaped to. In a sudden twist of fate, Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote meet, and become one - not only in their physical states, but mentally and psychologically in their mutual hatred of Peter Parker - and begin to tear-ass through New York, looking for Spider-Man. He (they, really) just want to kill Parker and Spider-Man. (Venom origin, stage 3)
The Sandman is just a dude, made of sand, who can shape the sand into stuff. Meh.

Wow. I'm surprised so many people didn't think Spiderman 2 was great. I can't remember the last time I liked a movie with such a big budget that much. One problem is that I think people are asking too much out of the comic book movie genre. Anyone who has read comic books can appreciate the dialogue in the movies. It is supposed to be overdone and not very subtle. Not crazy about Topher Grace playing Venom though. Venom is supposed to be huge and Eddie Brock is supposed to be a hardass. "Foreman" doesn't seem to possess either of these qualities.

whatever, i think they should base the show on venom vs spiderman alone. I mean cmon, IT'S SPIDERMAN VS VENOM! that's like the biggest shit that spiderman has to deal with! they're like arch enemies! it's like batman is to joker. or superman is to kryptonite. shit! but anyway. topher grace is too puny to be eddie brock. and for the person who didn't know what venom is, it's some alien blob species that takes over people turning them evil (hence the black spiderman series)

spiderman 2 was nowhere near as good as it could have been. doc oc was the only good part about it and i don't care what anyone says. the film's set up was awful and dragging, spiderman being in public without his mask on is completely ludicrous, and as someone has already stated the dialog could have been a lot better.
as for spider man 3, it looks like its going to be as dissapointing and frustrating as x-men 3. i pray to god these next two sequals end marvel comic book movies, because these two have been the only REALLY good ones, and now even they are going to be dreadful. someone needs to tell marvel its time to just stick to comics.

I don't know what is wrong with some of you guys, spider-man 2 was a great example of what a movie based on a comic book should be, and the thing with him without his mask, the movies have a different stryline than from the comics(and there a quite a few different storylines).
Anyways back to the subject, I can't really imagine topher grace as a villain, but when he will be in venom form, he will probably be almost completly computer generated, so don't be woried that he won't be "beefed up", but he will, Sam Raimi isn't stupid, he will make venom look as Todd McFarlane wanted him to look.

I agree on the fact, that part 2 just rode the wave of euphoria, the 1st (& still better) part created. The story continued flat & was cheap told. The action was good & well animated, except the trainscene (bah!)I hope that the 3rd won't be overloaded with foes, so that the story lacks even more & the worst thing Raimi could do is, to make it an open-ending - this never worked out! The storyproposal "ED" gave sounds good - hopefully Raimi gets back to his roots & lifts the characters to priority again.

Spider-Man 2 was not a great film by any means. It was also far from the worst comic movie of recent history.

actually, i thought that spiderman had discovered earlier about the symbiote's weakness to sonic waves, and ended up using the church's bell for the sonic reverberation or something to separate himself from the symbiote. that's why the alien was in the church. not sure how original that was, but i remember reading it as a kid in the early/mid '90's. grace is an interesting choice for this, because i've never pictured him in the pumped up supervillain role. hopefully spiderman will go venom for awhile, i'd like to see the wonton destruction and dual personality conflict here.

For all of you...dont think that just because Dunst said it, it is true..because its not. Dunst has a history of blearting the villains..but then the ones she says are NOT in it...Like she said the lizared would be in SM2 and Black Cat..that never happend....Dunst could also be getting paid by the producer to spread rumers that arnt true...Or she just said it to mess everyone up..It could all be part of teh surprise, because i mean Topher as Venom...kinda rediculous...i know they could pull it off, but its not ganna happen. Venom is not Grace. Venom is probly not in SM3. Until sony confirms it, nothing is confirmed. Dont you think if it was official, The SM3 website would have it up? Nope they still are presenting it like the villains havnt been announced. They have NOT been announced....Why does everyone believe everything someone with no credibility says..I mean she stated this before she even got her script also..thats another hint...? lol..kinda funny...

Topher Grace as Venom? a bit random and unlikely, but Raimi has not disapointed twice now. i dont understand why everyone is fretting about Grace as Venom! ok he is a puny nerd and Venom is a hulking mass of muscle, but he'll bulk up and then the wonders of CGI will create Venom 100%, and all we'll see is Grace in the few random scenes as Eddie Brock. Trust Raimi, he would be mad to a) ruin the franchise and b) have any shot of 'Venom' not full CGI. relax people, its all gonna fall into place!!

Spiderman got the symbiyote from a comic series called Secret Wars in which a cosmic being named The Beyonder tested earths heros against earths villains on a distant planet in a war to see which side would win. During which spidey's suit became tattered and was replaced by one provided by the alien race of the planet( this being the "Black Suit". Spidey goes back to earth afterward, suit gives him evil tendencies, he winds up in a church while mentally fighting the symbiyote and the bell's soundwave remove the suit. Rewind a bit, Eddie Brock is a reporter for the DAILY GLOBE and was ruined when spiderman messed up an exclusive story brock had by catching a murderer eddy was interviewing. He got fired and then served divorce papers from his wife and ended up in the same church as spidey because he was a catholic and planned on ending his life which an automatic trip to hell in that religion. So thats when and how venom was created. So if you didnt know now you know. Any way the whole venom-sandman thing makes a little sense because in the comics venom and sandy get into a fight which eventually cause sandmans death(sorry if i ruined the future movie for some of you but if your going to watch it you need to know this so shut up. Anyway this will probably not be the case because if history can be trusted none of the past 2 movies made sence or were that close to the comic story. This is because Sam Raimi thinks that his version of spiderman is far superior to THE REAL one all of us true fans have been into for the past 40+ years. Hey but he's the director right. Any true fans should and must be disgusted with the gross miss handling of the webslingers story which is exampled in the terrible casting, half-@$$ debotched & mutalated story, and "new age" visual representation of the characters. The truth is that the past movies sucked and the new one WILL SUCK period end of discussion. Stan Lee, why have you forsaken us?
