Johnny Depp's Radio Debut
Filed under: Documentary, Fandom, Newsstand, Johnny Depp
There's a fascinating review in today's Guardian of Johnny Depp's performance on England's Radio 2, for whom he hosts a James Dean feature
tonight. What's so interesting about the article is that it is based
entirely on Depp's voice, an aspect of his acting that doesn't always
get much attention. Though the writer has great regard for what he
calls Depp's "vocal range," he nevertheless is bothered by the actor's
decision to do the Dean piece "as himself," a delivery he describes as "a low Kentucky mumble." While the poor review is as much for Radio 2's misguided effort to change its image by casting a Hollywood star as it is for Depp's work, it's well worth a read for the new perspective it provides.

Mmmmm. It's more like a murmur to me--it was a pleasure to hear Johnny as Johnny.

His voiceover work as Hunter in Fear and Loathing was simply amazing. I love hearing the man talk.

There is no better voice than Depp's rich, subtle baritone - but BBC he's not, unless the role calls for it. Remember, Brits, the subject is James Dean, not King James. James Dean is about a real as it gets (except for Depp) - how phony to have Depp be anything but himself. Maybe he has a Kentucky mumble, but have you ever heard the Indiana Dean talk? Hicksville. But it seemed to work for him, didn't it.

So was it live i ask?/or pre recored? Do you know what it was good just to hear that info about what the show was about, as im always on the insight of new knowledge on all aspects, so yes it was good to be informed. Why hinder in the sense unless that is profound a meaning of natural callings, you act in sense of what is being called upon you to do, so radio2 it was good for you. Taste of new things always a positive thing :).
