Joss Whedon Talks Spike
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom
The other day I mentioned that the idea of a Spike movie is alive and
well, but anything more than vague information has been hard to find. Now, though, Joss Whedon
himself has given an update to TV Guide on the status of the project,
so we know exactly where it stands. The good news is that the creative side is moving forward: all of the "art guys" are being pulled together and are actively discussing ideas for the film. The bad news, though, is that nothing on the business side has been addressed - no contact with the WB, nothing more than casual conversations with Amy Acker, James Marsters, and Alyson Hannigan. Basically, it's just an idea that's percolating, like about a billion others in the movie world. As Whedon himself put it, "At this point it's still me and my buddies going, 'Wouldn't it be cool?'" So, yeah. Right now, it's a pipe dream for all of us.

Personally I love anything Whedon and a Spike movie or series would be my idea of Heaven! I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that this becomes a reality soon!

I don't think financing is an issue. Based upon Joss's relationship with (NBC) Universal, I'd say he could get a Spike centered film financed by them easily and a commitment to show it on SciFi or USA. Hell, it could easily be a triple alliance (considering Fox's ownership) between Fox Studios, the WB, and SciFi (or USA). The WB could get dibs to show the telefilm first, with the repeat rights going to SciFi, and Fox gets the backend on home video distribution. He could get more cash from the WB by threatening to totally bypass them and deal directly for a premiere on SciFi.

Joss Whedon stop dragging your feet! You know people love Spike more than Angel and/or Buffy. He's the cool badboy. People would trip over each other to watch a movie, a box office movie, a series, or tv mini series about Spike. Has anyone ever thought what a Spike/Buffy offspring would be like? The door is wide open for that senario. Don't laugh. Darla and Angel did it.

Again, didn't ANYONE outside Australia see James' interview with Rove McManus on the late night chat show ROVE LIVE?
He was talking about it in JULY 2004...!!

EXCERPT:
Rove: Now tell me, is there going to be, or I have heard there is going to be more Spike in the future. That there’s possibly another project involving Spike. Tell us about this.
James: Yeah, I hope so. Joss. It’s was interesting. Joss came to me at the end of Angel.
Rove: The creator of Buffy.
James: Yes, Joss Whedon. Who wrote, along with David Greenwalt, developed both Buffy and Angel, together. And, um, it was weird, because I was doing some ah just basic work for the show, voice over stuff and filling in bits and he came up to me and he’s like ’Man I really like your work and I’m hoping that you’re still interested’ And he’s, he’s kissing me butt! And I’m like ’What are you doin, Joss?’ And I told him, I said, ’Joss, stop it. Three lines, fifty lines, lead role, whatever you want man, call me. I’m there for you, because frankly, you’re one of the best writers I’ve worked with.’ And ah, he said he wanted to do a Spike movie...
