Cooking with Johnny Depp
Over the years, you'd think that moviegoing audiences would have learned the lesson of Don't Try This At Home. But no ... now people are starting to look to films for cooking lessons. And not foodie films, either, but culty Johnny Depp movies. This Web site illustrates one couple's adventures in making grilled cheese sandwiches with an iron "the Benny and Joon way." They discovered that the film may have taken some liberties in cooking accuracy, perhaps for the sake of comedy. Turns out the rayon setting that Depp's character recommends for ideal sandwiches produces quite inferior grilled cheese. Not only that, but the movie fails to mention that using the iron without a protective layer of foil or waxed paper will render it unfit for clothes pressing afterwards, unless you like that burnt-cheese stench. I can only hope this isn't the beginning of a trend. Which Johnny Depp movies might adventurous cooks imitate next: Pirates of the Caribbean? Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? Let's hope they steer toward Chocolat and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory instead.

Or maybe people do think about what would happen, but do it anyway just to have fun. I tried the iron thing, and yes i did have to make the iron hotter, but the sandwiches turned out quite nicely. And I even thought to use an old iron.

I believe it's called imaginative insight, next best thing, cant knock it. COME ON :), least those toasted butty's fill you up, you wouldn't go hungry and it toasted lol. you think using a iron bad imagine those restaurants that use well, not wish to say what they use lol, i go on the theory that their's ways around every aspect of anything you do. Okay okay, so after watching B&J I may have tried to iron my cheese sandwiches too. Well, it could have produced the world's best ever toasted sanwiches couldn't it? You've got to try these things.

Well, that's my husband, my iron, and my idea, so I hope you don't mind if I comment.
We did it for a goof (what a surprise), and the iron cleaned up just fine with a little steel wool.

Well, I'm the husband and I'm the one with the iron. And guess what? What we learned making grilled cheese samwidges the B&J way morphed into better product using the more conventional fry pan.
