Jeb Bush Helps Out with Narnia Promotion
Filed under: Animation, Deals, Disney, Family Films, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Politics
When Florida governor Jeb Bush chose The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
as the second book in Just Read, the state's reading-related contest
series for kids, the primary stink was about the book's religious
elements. Groups concerned about the separation of church and state,
for example, objected to the reading program's presence in schools (the
program's website links to Walden Media's, which offers discussion of a "17-week Narnia Bible Study for children").Now, however, there are more reasons to complain. As discussed here earlier, the co-producer of the upcoming Narnia film is Walden Media, which is owned by Philip Anschutz. Anschutz also happens to have donated $100,000 to Republican "candidates and causes" in the past three elections. Ah-ha. While Walden Media did give $10,000 to Just Read, Florida "to help pay for food and beverages for a reading coaches conference," that seems a small price to pay for a statewide promotion that will have thousands of kids demanding to be taken to see their movie. Oh, and the last book chosen by Just Read, Florida? That was Carl Hiaasen's Hoot, which will be made into a movie by...yes, you guessed it: Walden Media. Classy, Jeb. Very classy.

I love CS Lewis. He is an intellectual and a thinker. Our kids need to be exposed to this type of individual. His writing is wonderful. Have the critics ever read his works? Have you ever considered what he says? Our kids deserve the best and Lewis is part of that. I hope the movie lives up to the story.
I'm also sure Philip Anschutz gave to Democratic causes and special interests. Is there a conspiracy here?

Whats this? Agencies wanting people to see there movie? People being republicans?! Thats unpossible!
I'll take the flagrant plug and blatant advertising if it means kids will start reading. Once they start reading... they'll be able to seperate this type of BS (not this article) on their own.

Because, you know, those two books aren't worthy and haven't won any awards or anything. It's a Bush, must be sinister!!!

Anyone who'll complain about this is just a nutter I mean really what's the problem with a bit of cross promotion of some GOOD stories & a political party?
I'm glad to hear Jeb's throwing his support behind LW&W before the movie comes out -- hopefully people will take note of this and go and see the movie.

Jeb Bush has been a great Gov.
for the State of Florida since 1999.
Jeb and his wife Columba has been a stronger supporter of literacy and the arts. I hope the movie lives up to C.S. Lewis' vision.

I know it sounds like Jeb is forcing libraries to offer some free advertising to these films, but bear in mind that libraries are ALWAYS quick to put their own advertising posters for any book connected to any current film. I'd say the reading groups are getting much more publicity out of this than Disney/Walden (although cross-pollination is always good). And in any case, it seems just as legitimate as any other form of media advertising, only with the added bonus of possibly getting kids to read.

Our librarian read all 6 of the books to us in grade school, that must have been Prescott Bush at that time indoctrinating us. It was so subtle we had no idea they were anything more than stories, much less religious.
But fortunately we have Wonkette to thank for uncovering this so-called "literacy program" propaganda.
By the way, what's wrong with Walden? That they make tons of money off of movies parents can take their kids to? Do you think the Weinsteins were lining up for the Narnia films?
Bottom line is everyone loves what Harry Potter has done for children reading in general, but you take something even vaguely Christian (instead of sorcery), add a Bush, and it's the deepest, darkest conspiracy of evil. We're through the looking glass here, folks...
