James Bond Casting Rumor # 676: Either the Secret is Safe, or it's Daniel Craig
Filed under: Action, Casting, RumorMonger, Newsstand
On the same day that Reuters published an article
loudly proclaiming the "007 Secret Safe," London's Daily Mail has
reported that Layer Cake star and alleged Sienna Miller boytoy Daniel Craig will be the new James Bond. Since it's fun to pay attention
to tabloid rumors, we'll assume that the Mail is right. According to their
scoop, the final Bond throwdown was between Craig (who, at 37, is quite a bit older than the producers have been telling us the new Bond will be) and some guy named
Henry Cavill (22 and very pretty), and the decision was made based on another set of
auditions, as well as a Zoolander-style model-off in tuxes. Honestly.
Well, maybe not exactly like Zoolander, but they both put on tuxes and
people looked at them. Which is almost the same, really. The Mail reports that the official announcement will be made later this week. Yeah, well. We've heard that before.

The next Timothy Dalton.
Seriously. Craig is great and he may be closer to the book Bond, but I predict here that this will go down about as successfully as Dalton was in the role, or Lazenby way before him.
End result, Sony will be asking for Brosnan to return for the film after this, or will pony up enough cash to McMahon to change his mind. And by that time, Nip/Tuck will probably have run its course.

Jeremy, I immediately thought Dalton as well. And while I actually love him as Bond, I realize I'm a tiny minority - it's interesting/insane that they want to go less gimmicky and silly, given that Dalton's more serious take was such a disaster at the box office.

I still say someone like Gerard Butler would have made a better Bond, but I'm glad that they didn't go with a child for the part if this rumor is true.

When I saw that Daniel Craig was the front-runner for the next Bond role I immediatly thought back to that greasy, diseased-looking, gangster flunky in Road to Perdition. In half of the scenes he was in it looked like Tom Hanks was sickened just to be in the same room with him. He just oozed trash. The man was a complete mess, and he doesn't look much better in real life. I don't really know a lot more of his other roles, but I think this is a real tragedy. James Bond is supposed to be the most suave, clever, dangerous stud on earth. And they throw us this pile and tell us he fits the role? Heaven help us.

Man, Robert, you should really check out Layer Cake. Daniel Craig dominates in that movie and should be more than enough to tell you he is a pimp and can certainly play the greatest pimp of all time.

When I think of Bond, Craig does not pop into my mind. Julian McMahon yes, even Adrian Paul would be a choice.

Here's a link to Brosnan's thoughts on the subject:

Class act MGM (aka Sony) is. Not.
Me thinks the parties in question will get their just rewards when the next film tanks at the box office. The public likes Pierce Brosnan. He is the actor *they* wanted back in the mid 80s and were forced to wait a decade for. Brosnan is still Bond to the public. The public did not ask for a new Bond, and they certainly aren't going to embrace this one, no matter how good *Layer Cake* was (the ending sucked).

Dear old Cubby will be wondering what he did to deserve such a wonderful stepson and daughter to trust his legacy to. In one careless casting they'll kill the franchise. Bond is a gentleman assassin, not a thug with a boxer's face.
The director's stated his desire to be true to the original 1953 novel - this brings to mind Ian Fleming's idea of Bond: Noel Coward, Hoagy Carmichael, David Niven, Cary Grant. How can Martin Campbell, Broccolli, and Wilson even consider a bruiser such as Craig? - What criteria have they used to appoint the man - simply an ability to act and to look good in a tux? If so, they have all seriously underestimated the role. Isn't it time they let Brosnan get on with his job?
