Spike Lee's Katrina documentary to investigate levee rumors
Filed under: Documentary, Celebrities and Controversy, DIY/Filmmaking, Politics
Never one to shy away from a controversy-infused spotlight, Spike Lee has thrown his hat into the already-crowded ring full of post-Hurricane Katrina documentaries. The filmmaker was on CNN yesterday, promoting his memoirs (Spike Lee: That's My Story and I'm Sticking to It), when an anchor asked him if he'd thought about making a film investigating the rumors that the government might have intentionally bombed the levees in order to fatally flood the poor, black district known as the Ninth Ward, whilst sparing the French Quarter. Lee responded that he's already begun working on an HBO documentary, called When the Levee Broke. Although Army officials have already dismissed the rumors, Lee told CNN's Daryn Kagan that he thinks they're still worth looking into: "I don't put anything past the United States
government," he said. "I don't find it too far-fetched that they tried
to displace all the black people out of New Orleans." HBO confirmed that they've signed a deal with Lee for the documentary, but the network didn't release any additional details.

Look, Read, Learn
Spend a day as a black man or black boy not at your house but go out in public and mingle. Don't stay behind close doors.
You better believe white boyz want to act black and talk black but be black or live black.
Not a ballplayer or actor or rapper for that matter.
Just live it for a single day then come back and write your commentary.
it aint about race its about hate and the hate runs deep over this heap both ways.
Must this story be told?
Then let be and learn from it.

living in the new orleans area all my life;i find that the only reason so many people were displaced by this storm ,is the fact that this was the only affordable housing for the underpaid workers in the areas workforce.whether it be, to some, a racial factor or purely financial hardship, these people carried the buisnesses that are now struggling to stay afloat. bring help to new orleans and lets make it home again!!!!!!!!!1

"I don't find it too far-fetched that they tried to displace all the black people out of New Orleans."
What an idiot. He could actually make an interesting documentary on race by investigating why the mayor and the media found it so easy to believe that a relatively black city would descend into anarchy and that 10,000 people were dead (they didn't and they weren't), but no, he's got to go completely off the deep end. Good luck on that, moron.
Where, by the way, do we racist whites everywhere want black people from New Orleans displaced to? Wouldn't racists want to keep them there, kind of in one place? The flood actually led to quite a bit of racial integration, like large numbers of black people moving to Utah, for example. It's just all such stupid thinking, but when you spend your life thinking everyone with a different skin color hates you, that's what you get.

sounds like you just dont get it do you, obviously you are no fan of Spike's work and you can rest assured that he will cover that aspect amongst many other things, such as why the delay, the dome disaster, the media scaremongering, the black people scaremongering (did anyone find the little girl who was supposedly raped and had her throat cut - no as he didn't exist).
Re the removal of blacks from NO, it's was property speculators who wanted them moved so they can turn it into beach fronts with marinas and the like as the poor black folk got in the way.
Seems from reading what you wrote Spike ain't the only one who thinks he's hated by those with a different skin colour.

One of the major breaks (17th Street Canal) was in Lakeview, a beachfront area primarily occupied by rich white folks and old white folks, including my grandparents. The whole "conspiracy theory" idea is ridiculous -- no one is that organized at a time of such crisis. I do think there are many legitimate race and class issues to examine from Katrina and I hope Spike Lee focuses on these issues, not the crazy levee rumors.

If white America was against Black America then there would still be slaves.I used to volunteer giving Christmas presents to poor Black children;whose mother or father was in jail, until my wife, son, and I were threatened to many times by Black passerby's(while delivering the presents). The most absolute racist areas in the U.S. are those occupied by Black people. I could do a documentary on this and prove it. No matter what city, town or neighborhood in this country. Why are there so few if any White people walking around freely and safely in the Black areas of America? Why are there so many Black people walking around freely and safely in White areas.
Why do all the White people stand around looking scared doing absolutely nothing while a Black person thrashes a White person in the White area? Why do so many Black people join in the thrashing of a white person in the Black area?
You've got to ask yourself why there is hardly any crime in the Appalachian Mountain area? The people there are starving to death and you can't find a FOOD STAMP office anywhere? By the way they are the poorest Americans and they are WHITE!!
You speak of contributions to White America???? Oh; but of course.... White kids are taught this new language," Yo MO FO,dat beatch is my ho so back off before I put a cap in your ass! WAY TO GO.
Of course this does not apply to the beautiful Black People of America who work hard, love their country, pay taxes, and raise their children to excel and not blame anyone but themselves for their shortcomings.

To Rick.
One: Half-Truths have more truth than total lies.
Two: If there was no foundation for stereotypes to be based, then there would be no stereotypes.
With that being said, I have to say that in my stereotyping of people, I am *Rarely* let down. Instead, At times, much to my pleasure to admit, with my habitual profiling of people based on their speech, dress, appearance, etc., that, I am at times surprised and impressed.
Pessimism and careful stereotyping is not dangerous nor harmful if practiced correctly.
Optimism and individual before group however is dangerous to the extreme.
To C. Graham:
Yes, anyone of light skin and living below the lower upper class range of income is very privy to the double-standard issues imposed by hate crimes and selective freedoms of speech.
I happen to live in Texas. I am happy to say that in my experiences in working in a bar, I have 80% accuracy in judging whether or not someone is going to give me trouble that night just based on looking at them on first visit.
The 19% discrepancy is about half of the mistaken stereotypees went Elsewhere to do something which would otherwise cause me to not be so friendly with them, and the other half is simply them being in a not too great a mood.
I leave a 1% margin of error, simply because it hasn't happened yet.

There's a young man in my hotel, Sheraton Brookhollow in Houston who have live footage of hurricane Katrina. It's his personal camcorder and it starts from the dry ground, to the high wind, the water rising, it going down, people being lifted in helicopters, as well as a dead body on the highway. It's very well put together and he's looking for someone
