When video game developer
Running with Scissors released a title called
Postal in 1997, it created so much controversy that
self-righteous wankers censorious politicians such as Senator Joe Lieberman immediately demanded that it be removed from store shelves. Lieberman and friends eventually got their way;
Postal was actually banned in several countries. Now RwS has announced that it's letting
Uwe Boll make a movie out of the game, with a targeted release in 2007. Boll has made a (mostly bad) name for himself directing (mostly unsuccessful) films based on (largely obscure) video games. His
Alone in the Dark, starring Christian Slater and Tara Reid, sat on the shelf for ages; but then again, as
Will Carlough wrote last week on
Slate, it wasn't exactly based on a beloved title to begin with ("What system did
Alone in the Dark come out on, Atari Jaguar?"). Running with Scissors' CEO, for his part, is confident that Boll is the right man for the job. “He understands the subject matter and has an
appreciation and affinity for controversy and political incorrectness," Vince Desi says. Boll himself agrees that P.I. is, in fact, his M.O. "The film will have all
the political incorrectness and American craziness from the game,
wrapped around an action thriller story line," Boll said. Ah, yes - American craziness. Cool cool!
Cinematical's kissing cousin
Joystiq doesn't usually put too much stock in Boll, but, as Conrad Quilty-Harper puts it, this might be one game that the director has a hard time screwing up: "Ironically,
Postal has the bare minimum of what you’d call a plot, so at least that reduces the chances of
Boll changing anything too much and annoying fans of the game."

Boll will still manage to screw it up no matter how bare of a plot line exists in the game...

The homeslice at Slate forgot about 1984's "Cloak and Dagger". I still maintain that that is the best videogame movie so far even with 21 years since its release.
And the Atari Jaguar rocked, btw. Tool.

The last Alone in the Dark game that I can remember came out for Dreamcast and possibly was ported to the PS2.
Uwe Boll directed the adaptation of House of the Dead (a light gun game), which was not heavy on plot. Also he cut to IN-GAME VIDEO during several moments of the movie... what a terrible idea.

Thanks for the link, Karina! And Jeremy, Cloak and Dagger didn't get mentioned since it isn't really based on a video game as much as it features a video game. And I'll have to take your word on the Jaguar.

Atari's arcade game "Agent X" was rebadged "Cloak and Dagger" for the movie of the same name. The movie featured the very same video game in it...swapping scenes from the arcade game and billing it as natively running on the Atari 5200. Thus the film deserves to be billed as a videogame adapatation more so than "House of the Dead" considering the *house* was not even featured in the movie. A film at the same time that could be described as featuring (Atari) videogames was D.A.R.Y.L.L. (sic).
As for the Atari Jaguar, it had Tempest2000, not to mention the best version of Doom at-the-time not running on a fully loaded PC, and Alien vs. Predator was incredible on the machine due to the near photo-realism of the graphics.
