Rob Bowman Discusses Reopening the X-Files

Mulder and Scully will most likely make a return to the big screen, but will Fight the Future director Rob Bowman be at the helm again? According to an article on IGN, he’d like to, but it’s nothing he can control. Bowman is currently filming Stephen King's Nightmares and Dreamscapes, and says his answer to the question of whether or not he will direct a new X-Files movie is “I have to be asked to direct it first”.
Bowman or no Bowman, it seems as though the movie is quite likely to happen, and it’s now only a matter of when. At this point, it is apparently an issue of timing; specifically, working out the schedules of stars David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, and creator Chris Carter. Bowman says he was told the new movie would have a stand-alone plot, so that viewers unfamiliar with the X-Files universe could jump right in. The real question is, does X-Files have the staying power to still be appealing to an audience nearly a decade since it last saw action? Honestly, I simply don’t know. I was never a big fan of the show, and only remotely remember watching bits of the movie at some sort of social event. Does this make me a bad geek? You X-Files fans should comment away and let me know your thoughts about a return to the franchise. In the meantime, maybe I’ll try to track down the first movie and give it my full attention.

It must be really hard for those three to find some time... especially with how full their schedules are.

You're kidding me. What could David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson possibly have on their schedule that would interfere with starring in a feature film? Let's see- drop the kids off at school, polish the Nebula award, make Lemonade... etc.

I'll watch whatever whatever they throw at me - as long as both Gillian and David are in it - and it's not some lame take on the Season 9 drama. Yeah, so, I thought they resolved most everything in the series - unless they're just going to do some other crazy conspiracy and resolve it in under 2 hours.

Yes, if GA and DD were involved, I'd be there to watch. For me, the show ended at Existence (season 8 finale) - I was a happy 'shipper. I watched here and there until the end though, just not as fully invested in the show at that point. But I'm all for another movie.

Gillian Anderson has been involving herself in a bunch of BBC productions for those that think she hasn't been working.
Sign me up for more Mulder & Scully adventures.
Hopefully they can take a lesson from the never-ending-Highlander-franchise and ignore a lot of the past like the deaths of the Lone Gunmen for starters.

seasons 1 to 7 were brilliant. as to the first movie - it should be understood that its main purpose was to drive more viewers to season 6. the second movie (if/when it happens) will have a totally different agenda.

Good point about the Highlander style stories. Fans of the series...good idea to ignore bits of canon (a la highlander) in interest of making a better movie? Or should X-Files try to keep it all intact ?

How could they make a film that honored all of the canon from the 9 seasons? Cigarette Smoking Man (formerly known to fans as "Cancer Man"), aka Mulder's biological father in that Darth Vader way, died in the series finale courtesy of a heat seaker missile. The Lone Gunmen died. Mulder and Scully had that baby together. Not to mention Agent Doggett (sic) and Reyes, which many casual fans will not even remember because they didn't watch those seasons.
It would be best to ignore a lot of the material from the later seasons, or pull a Cowboy Bebop and make the film set within a certain timeframe of prior seasons.

Retro time setting it could definately work. Are Duchovny and Anderson young enough looking to still pull it off? I guess in Hollywood that doesn't really matter too much...

The stars in question can pull it off physically, IMO. If a standalone plot is chosen I think fans could buy into a gap of this many years, between flicks. Also IMO, a standlone is really the only way a second XF flick is going to happen. Too many bits and pieces of (sort of) closure occurred in the last season, key characters killed off, the whole baby issue that came in from left field and then went right back out to left field via adoption. Not to mention the clock is now ticking regarding colonization and the date has been set. You just can't lean all that up against a wall and start the flick the morning after that motel room in Roswell, more's the pity. As a die-hard XF fan, I'll take what I can get!

Duchovny has three films coming out next year all made within the past year, so it's not like he's been sitting home and waiting for the phone to ring.
Anderson's been involved in small films and a BBC Dickens soap.
Carter's been kayaking in Wyoming, doing play-by-play for a minor league baseball team and sitting in a think tank musing about quantum physics in Santa Barbara.
The thing that'll make or break TXF2 is a great script and I don't think Carter is the man for the job, especially when you consider the twin disasters of seasons 8 and 9, IMO.

I'm a diehard fan of the show. Unlike most, I found Season 8 to be better than 7's lackluster effort. Season 9 sucked though. Anyway, another film is definitely a good idea. Everyone I know, even people I don't were fans of the show at one time or another and would certainly check out a 2nd flick. The Cowboy Bebop idea is good. Just make sure Skinner is back too!
