Johnny Depp has played a
transvestite, an
eyelinered pirate, the
world's worst filmmaker, a
drug dealer, and
Hunter S. Thompson, but as far as I can tell, never a full-on junkie. He'll change that when he stars in
Shantaram, a movie based on Gregory David Roberts' heroin-infused memoir. "I was a revolutionary who lost his ideals in heroin, a philosopher who
lost his integrity in crime, and a poet who lost his soul in a maximum-security
prison. When I escaped from that prison, over the front wall, between
two gun-towers, I became my country's most wanted man," writes Roberts on his
website. So who better to adapt such a story than Eric Roth, the man behind ...
Forrest Gump? The project is set up at Warner Brothers; no director has yet been named.

Johnny Depp's character, Inspector Fred Abberline, in the movie From Hell(2001) was indeed addicted to heroin as I recall. He even used the drug to gain insight into the crimes he was investigating.

Detective Abberline was addicted to Opium. And I think that Johnny will bring a dimension to Shantaram that no other actor would be able to. He has an ability to morph into any role he takes, grab it by the throat and make it his. Gregory David Roberts himself does not think anyone other than Johnny Depp would bring the right amount of truth to this role. I am anxious to see how this phenomenal book will be brought to life by the best actor of this generation.
