News from Slackerwood: abbreviated

American in Paris

I can't write a long News from Slackerwood today because I'm not even in Austin right now. I'm in San Francisco, visiting people and having a little post-multiple-festivals vacation. So it's difficult for me to find and write about everything that's going on in Austin next week. I can share a few highlights:

  • The Paramount is getting ready for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by showing all three movies in the series from Nov. 2-6. You can see them separately or in one big triple-feature marathon. Dates and times are available here.
  • Check out last week's News from Slackerwood for info on all the Halloween-related film events in Austin. I think I caught everything; if not, feel free to post info on what I missed in the comments.
  • Alamo Drafthouse Downtown has prom fever. The theater is screening the documentary The World's Best Prom on Tuesday-Thursday Nov. 1-3. The documentary is about Racine, Wisconsin, where the entire town gets prom-fanatic every year. However, this being Alamo Drafthouse, you know there's more. First of all, on Tuesday and Thursday, you can also see the 1980 horror film Prom Night for free as a double-feature. Second of all, everyone who goes to the movie gets into Alamo's "Austin's Best Prom" event on Saturday night, Nov. 5.
  • Austin Film Society continues its "Southern Uprising: Recent Korean Cinema" series on Tuesday, Nov. 1 with 3-Iron, a movie I'm sorry I won't be in town to see. The 2004 movie apparently contains very little dialogue.
  • The second annual Austin Asian Film Festival takes place Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 3-6 at various venues throughout town. The festival opens with a screening of A State of Mind, a 2004 documentary about North Korean gymnasts.
  • A selection of short films from local filmmaker Jenn Garrison will screen on Thursday, Nov. 3 at the Arbor Great Hills. aGLIFF and Reel Women are sponsoring the screening, which will be followed by a Q&A session. One of the films is the trailer for Prizewhores, which will air in full on KLRU-TV as part of "SXSW Presents" on Dec. 2.
  • The Sinus Show is bringing back Britney Spears' masterpiece Crossroads for another mock-filled set of screenings at Alamo Drafthouse Downtown on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5 and Friday, Nov. 11.
  • I've always wanted to see An American in Paris in a theater. Alamo Village is showing it on Sunday, Nov. 6, accompanied by a multi-course French feast. Sounds delicious, but those of us on a budget really wish we could buy a ticket for the movie alone, and maybe sneak in a croissant or baguette.
  • Finally, I forgot to post last week that Fantastic Fest announced its jury and audience award winners. Dark Hours not only won the jury award for best film, but also shared the audience award with Hostel and Strings. I think Strings and Night of the Living Dorks were my favorite films from the festival; my reviews are collected here.
