First Look at Ghost Rider's Blackheart
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Fandom

Above you will find the first look at Wes Bentley as Blackheart from the upcoming Ghost Rider movie starring Nicolas Cage. Director Mark Steven Johnson discussed his take on the Blackheart character, saying the he (Johnson) did a lot of research into demonology to help him craft the role. He read about fallen angels, and how some did not follow Lucifer into Hell, but rather landed on earth in various forms. Johnson says Blackheart is tired of waiting for the end days, so he decides to “give my dad the finger and do it myself.” Blackheart begins collecting demons, and Johnny Blaze (Ghost Rider) has to find them and bring them back.
I like the Ghost Rider comic title. I think the character of
Johnny Blaze is a lot of fun and has a slightly different feel than most of the
Marvel heroes. Do I think Nicolas Cage can pull it off? Er…no. Not really. I’m sorry Nic, but I just don’t
think you’ve got the panache. However, I will be very happy if you prove me
wrong. As for the image of Blackheart, I suppose it looks cool enough, although a bit too generic-thuggish for now. We'll have to wait on later images to get a better idea of the character's style. Thoughts?

Research? It sounds like MSJ fired up some old episodes of *Brimstone* and decided to spin it as "demonology research".
I'm not concerned about whether Cage can pull it off or not. Actually, I'm sure he can. Can MSJ pull it off? Well, let's see. Instead of directly adapting the superior Frank Miller tale "Born Again", MSJ wrote his own take on the character of *Daredevil* and with lackluster results.
Yes, the director's cut of *Daredevil* is better than the theatrical version...but still fatally flawed compared to adapting "Born Again". Sure, an adaptation would have require excising Captain America, Thor, and the deranged drug-addicted soldier, but the stronger focus on the rivalry between the Kingpin and Daredevil would have been better...and without the cliche Tim Burton *Batmanesque* riffing to make Fisk the killer of Murdoch's dad long ago. That was stupid.

Ouch, the blog title reminds me of that dreadful cheap film that SciFi Channel shows at 3am every once in awhile:
Matthew Blackhart - Monster Hunter
or Monster Killer. I forget.

Good comments regarding the director's ability, Jeremy. Particularly the bit about Daredevil. Star!

Since you've listed this as the first look, I'm assuming you missed the trailer that popped up online a few months back (it was pulled pretty quickly). There's a lot there to suggest that, in fact, neither MSJ nor Nicolas Cage can pull it off - Nicolas Cage wears one of the worst hairpieces I've seen in ages, and, as Johnny Blaze, does the same "can't be bothered" mope he's exhibited to every film he's made in the last ten years. Also, the Ghost Rider cg looks like a video game, in a really, really bad way, and Wes Bentley, whom I want to like so much (The Claim!) comes off like a high school goth kid pretending he *really* is a vampire.
It would have been nice to see a Batman Begins-like approach to this, but, alas, I'm worried this will be horrible.

I did indeed miss that trailer. Thanks for the word on it! Sad to hear that it plays into my assumptions of a lackluster film. I really wanted this one to be worthwhile.
Star for the tip!

Nobody wears a hairpiece like Billy Zane (not even Shatner or Reynolds). That man has the perfect head for a hairpiece. Its up their with Anakin's head fitting inside the Darth Vader death mask.
Granted, Zane's perfectly artificial follicles won't save *Bloodraine* from sucking marrow from Boll's investors...including Zane himself!

From the look of this image I am going to comfortably assume that this movie is going to be complete shit.
