Wild Bunch to be "updated." Kill me now.
David Ayer,
who wrote The Fast and the Furious and S.W.A.T., has decided that his
next project should be a remake of The Wild Bunch, generally considered
one of the best westerns ever made. Just FYI, it'll be in a modern setting.
Oh, and it's not a western anymore. Are you freaking serious?! This
news is so profoundly wrong that Sam Peckinpah, in lieu of just rolling over
in his grave, might actually climb out of it and kick Ayer's ass.The Ayer version of The Wild Bunch (I hope he at least has the decency to change the damn title) will reportedly revolve around "the CIA, drug cartels and a heist," while supposedly maintaining the "Wild Bunch characters and the elements that made the original film so memorable." Uh huh. And I'm sure all that'll work out just fine. This travesty is schedule to start shooting next summer.

Is it me or is there a MAJOR creativity crisis going on right now?

Bah, *Tombstone* is the best western, period. Makes me cringe to think the Academy didn't nominate Kilmer for his role yet they gave the statue to Quaid for the same character.
I haven't cringed like that at the Academy except for when they gave Hanks the Oscar for *Forest Gump* over Hawthorne in *The Madness of King George (III)*. That was a crime, especially since Hanks riffed his portrayal off what his brother had done in a similar role in an almost unknown B-rated film from a few years earlier.

I got an idea ...they should remake the movie with the same theme but family value added to it ...The Wild Brady Bunch.
Hollywood is in bad shape. There is no creativity whatsoever. My vote for all-time favorite western is Unforgiven. I love Tombstone too.

For sheer fun, I always love a good dose of Sliverado.
As for bemoaning lack of creativity--Deadwood, anyone? How about the upcoming Brokeback Mountain? Both Westerns, both fresh, both gripping. Yes, there will always be remakes that make us roll our eyes (there's a "boyz in the hood" one being made now of Rio Bravo), but there are still producers and filmmakers willing to take chances.
