Director's cut of Dark City!
Filed under: Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Noir, Fandom, Newsstand
As Ryan's recent Dark City installment of his mysterious-titled Cinema of the Caribbean
series revealed, those of us who love Alex Proyas's 1998 film are much less alone than
we had thought. And to add even more joy to our newfound,
warm-and-fuzzy sense of community, the film's biggest-name fan (aka
Roger Ebert) has spilled some incredible news, both in his comment on Ryan's piece and on his own site: he just finished
recording a commentary for the movie. In and of itself, this is pretty
cool news - the guy adores Dark City, and almost all enthusiastic
commentary is a fun listen. But, according to Ebert, his commentary
isn't for the version of the film that we all know and love. Instead, it's for
a NEW, DIRECTOR'S CUT! There's no info available yet on when this DVD
is due to be released, but still - it's amazing news.

All Matrix fans should be required to watch this film, in my opinion...especially ones who think that property is so *original*.

This is fantastic news. Dark City is a long time personal favorite and if I had such a list, it'd easily be in my top 15 best.
And that Ebert commentary is also one of my all time favorites.

Martha, the film was released in 1998 not 1988.

Lovelovelove this movie.
Here's hoping the "director's cut" consists of the theatrical cut, minus only the surprise-ruining and frankly pointless voice-over introduction by Sutherland.
Aside from that, I think the flick's as good as it can be. But that won't stop me from double-dipping, obviously.

Didn't Ebert already record a commentary for the original DVD release of this one?

He did, Michael - but he's either recorded additional material about the new version or an entirely new track (most likely the former).
