First full-length Blu-Ray movie -- Charlie's Angels? Great.
Filed under: Sony, Tech Stuff, Newsstand
While we were sleeping in this morning, our sister blog, HD Beat, totally scooped us today on Sony's first Blu-Ray movie -- and the movie is (drumroll, please)...Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle? Yup, that's right. Out of all the movies they could have picked for the First Ever Blu-Ray movie, the suits at Sony decided that the best way to showcase Blu-Ray is by giving viewers the high-def cleavage of Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but really, aren't there a lot of movies that would have been better choices for the first Blu-Ray film?
HD Beat's Kevin Tofel would have preferred The Matrix, and I gotta agree with him that would have been a much better pick: Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss kicking ass in high def would be much better than three chicks shaking their bootys in bikinis. What films do you want to see in Blu-Ray? Give us your picks!

Well, given that The Matrix is owned by Warner Brothers (and I still believe they still have a hard-on for HD-DVD) and Charlie's Angels: FT is a Sony property, it makes since it would show up. Granted, it would be awesome to see that badass-ry for High-Def. If Americans didn't have such an adversion to subtitles, I would do Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Kung Fu Hustle. Both beautiful films in the visual and action department (and owned by Sony), it would a nice little test to show off the hardare.

Could the executives at Sony be any dumber than they are? I am going to say no. This company is being run like GM... I will not miss Sony when it is gone.

Well, it was too much to assume it would be Spider-man or Spider-man 2...
Not really a movie I need to see again, this 'Full Throttle.'
I'm always a fan of '2001' on new formats, and I'd like to see 'Apocalypse Now' on HD. 'Master and Commander' on HD. 'Casino' would look good, 'Taxi Driver,' 'Blade Runner' (PLEASE SOMEONE WITH POWER READING THIS: GIVE US THE 'STUDIO THEATRICAL RELEASE' VERSION), 'In The Mood For Love,' 'Kill Bill,' of course the 'Star Wars' films, and an HD-release of 'Dancer In The Dark.' That last one was a little joke, of course - it's shot in DV.

First, let's set aside that I will never buy another Sony product again (can everyone say rootkit?). Then, let's ignore that I'll probably have to license my Blu-Ray discs for each TV I have.
If I could offer my opinion to Sony, I'd suggest a movie that would actually have broad appeal, and be enhanced by improved image quality. CA:FT does have appealing broads, that always present an appealing image, but I have something else in mind. So Legends of the Fall or either of the Spiderman movies would seem like better choices than Charles Angels.

Wow, the only way HD-DVD could top that release with another premiere dud would be to exclusively release *Ishtar* (or *The Last Action Hero*) on HD-DVD. Err...those are Sony/Columbia flicks, come to think of it.

Hey, I want to chime in with Scaramanga's pleading for a new release (Blu-Ray or even barebones DVD) of the "studio version" of *Blade Runner*. Usually, I side with director's cuts, but on that particular title, I think the studio version is head-and-shoulders above the official director's cut.
I'd also prefer to see a Blu-Ray release of *John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China* over a release of *Kung Fu Hustle*.
