Steven Kloves back on board for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

As James Rocchi mentioned last week in his post on the troubles facing the Harry Potter movie franchise, screenwriter Steven Kloves, who scripted the first four Harry Potter films, is not writing the screenplay for the next film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. That film is being scripted by Michael Goldenberg, a Sundance Institute alum and playwright who cowrote the most excellent script for 2003's vastly underrated Peter Pan. Kloves is back on board, however, for the sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and, according to IMDB, is expected to start work on that script soon.
I'm curious to see how a different writer adapting the source material will affect the feel of the fifth movie, and then how they'll bring it back to Kloves feel for the sixth. Goldenberg already showcased his talent for working with fantasy with a dark edge in Peter Pan, so I'm sure he'll do well with Harry. Besides, J.K Rowling maintains tight control over the films, and I can't imagine she'd let anyone stray too far from the tone of her books.

Here is my question. Do you think that they will shoot any of the movies at the same time? I mean, with the kids getting older and all, I just kind of wonder if it wouldn't be in their best interest to do multiple movies at the same time and just release them a year apart. Just a thought, but have there been any rumors or anything about them doing that? I think it would be a good idea to not have a 25 year old Harry in the final film, but that's just me.

While I agree that Peter Pan was very underrated, when I heard Michael Goldenberg speak in April he maintained that the majority of his script was actually overwritten. His credit remained as a Guild formality.
Based on Contact, however, he still seems like a tremendously promising writer.

Aaron,
Well, Order of the Phoenix is slated for 2007, and IMDB shows Half-Blood Prince as being slated for 2008. Although I've not seen anything "official" on the subject, my best guess would be they're working on the two films almost simultaneously, and that's why they brought in Goldenberg for OotP. I'd also be willing to bet the Kloves has some kind of overseeing rights on Goldenberg's script, too, if nothing else for continuity's sake.
Realisitically, though - if they keep that pace up, Dan Radcliffe will be 19 playing 16 in The Half-Blood Prince, which isn't that bad. Now, if only Rowling would hurry up and write that last book....

David,
I've actually heard that too, from someone who knows Goldenberg and read the Peter Pan script as it was being developed. From what I've heard there were a lot of changes to the script in the final movie - apparently the writer and director had different visions. Contact was a good film, though, and Goldenberg is also working on Where the Wild Things Are (can't wait for that!) so his future looks bright.
I'm very curious what he ends up doing with the script for Order of the Phoenix!
