The Libertine: more release details
Filed under: Drama, Independent, Distribution, Exhibition, The Weinstein Co., Johnny Depp, Cinematical Indie
I was shocked by how many people expressed concern over The Weinstein Company's release plans for The Libertine, although I suppose I shouldn't have been - it's probably dangerous to underestimate the star power of Johnny Depp. At any rate, the comments on this post compelled me to send an email to The Weinstein Company to confirm that the initial information I had been given about the film's release was still correct. I was told that yes, the film is being released in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, and yes, its initial run will only last a week. Right now the plan is to return to theaters nationwide on January 13 but – and I know many of you were worried about this very thing – as the film is unrated, there's a good chance that those of you who only have access to middle-American multiplexes will never get to see it.I'm only the messenger ... but toss your angst in the comments, anyway.

I had the pleasure of seeing The Libertine twice in as many days last week. I found it to be beautifully devastating, devastatingly beautiful. I do hope that everyone who wants to see this film has the opportunity to do so.

I'm in the UK and saw the Libertine on Friday. It was stunning. Simply stunning. If Johnny Depp doesn't get an Oscar nomination for this, there's no justice. I am going again today, and will definitely see it a third time before it leaves the cinemas.
I am saddened and appalled that a film of this stature has not recieved a ratings certificate. What's up with the film world when you can show extreme graphic violence, but not sex?
This movie has enormous artistic merit and deserves an unrestricted release.

That's a bummer. I'm in Indiana and that's as middle America as you can get. I've been following news on The Libertine ever since it was in production. This latest development is definitely not making my day.

Why do people in mid-America all get lumped together as right wing Christians? There's alot of us Kansas Citians that have been waiting a long time to see this? I love to see any Johnny Depp movie and will be very upset to not even get the chance to see it!

I am a very big admirer of Johnny Depp. Not only do I think he is one of the most beautiful men in cinema, but one of the best and talented actors as well. He is not merely a "star" but an actor. He embodies what the word actor means. I do hope the Libertine gets shown in New Orleans, althogh I may be able to see it in NY as well. It should not be restricted and have a wider release. For goodness sake, how prudish do the powers that be think the U.S. audiences are? There are plenty explicit films that have gotten wide release.

How frustrating to read that folks in England are already enjoying this intriguing film while I may end up not getting to see it at all in the states! I am an optimist so I will keep looking for possible screenings the the chances seem slim.

Yes, I did get to see the movie at it's world premier in Hollywood, Johnny Depp's performance is Oscar worth , and great to see a movie without all the special camera effect, just good acting. Loved it.

Just seen it. Exploded many personal romantic myths of time. Poignant and eerily realistic. Depps performance entrancing.
