Jim Carrey Just Won't Go Away

The news has been out for awhile that a Ripley's Believe It or Not movie is in the works for Paramount Pictures, based on the unusual life of Robert Ripley, world explorer, collector, and columnist. Cool, you think. This has potential. Further news reports that Tim Burton, fresh off of Corpse Bride, was interested in doing the project. Even better, you muse.
I know I’m being unnecessarily harsh. I imagine loads of Jim Carrey fans out there frothing at the mouth, demanding my scalp in payment for my evil words. But then I think, hey, if they dig Jim Carrey, they can’t really be all that intelligent. My scalp is probably safe. Although to be honest- Eternal Sunshine was pretty spiffin’ fantastic. Maybe there is hope for Carrey as an actor after all. And if there is, there’s probably nobody better to bring it out than

Man on the Moon
Truman Show
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
All really, really great performances. How can you doubt him after those movies?
The only part of this news that worries me is Tim Burton who has always suceeded in making visually interesting but ultimately mediocre movies. If John August is also added to this project that's a plus though.

You can't even acknowledge the fact that he is a brilliant comedian, and you say he's not a good actor but have seen his more serious roles like The Majestic,Man on the Moon,Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He has proven when he gets more serious material he can deliver. So I respectfully disagree because it is a universal fact that he is a great actor! I would love a response.

I hated Man on the Moon, and found Truman Show to be mediocre at best, but as I stated in my post, I'll definately give you Sunshine. Maybe he is developing into a good dramatic actor- I'll do my best to watch this movie (if I remember by 2007) with an open mind towards Carrey's performance.
And thanks for putting it so nicely, Wallace. I think I might actually give Man on the Moon another try, since people seem to be giving it some strong recommendations.
I don't know about your charge of him being a talented comedian, as I've never seen him in standup. As far as a comedic actor goes- I hate him. Ace Ventura(2)is one of the very few movies I've ever walked out of a theatre on. He does have a very strong on screen presence, though. I'll give him that.

Bruce the Almighty, The Mask, Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, to name a few....How can anyone claim that Jim C, is not on the TOP 5 list of best comedians in the World (in his category, he is actually, the best)!!!
He brings in all that "his kind of movies" requires, fun, magic, imagination, morale, good vs. evil... and a lot of (unexpected, absolute fun)..... Go on Bruce, just continue what you are doing, you are doing great!!!

I really hated Man on the Moon, but i completely respected Jim Carrey in it. I am not a fan of Jim Carrey as a comedian, or Andy Kaufman, but i thought Jim Carrey was amazing as Andy Kaufman despite my dislike of Kaufman and the movie.

wha.. didnt like the truman show. wha hand over the scalp. I have yet to see a movie of Jim Carrey that I did not like. Mr Majestic??? ESSM??? His comedy is one of the most dynamic out there and whats amazing is his ability to change style from comedie to dramatic. Give the guy his due. Hes definetly has put in the time. And if anyone can really tap into his abilities that would be Mr Burton.
You didnt like planet of the apes. Whaa??- ok I was reaching on that one.

Mark ... I fear you are letting your intelligentsia snobbery interfere with your enjoyment of true entertainment. You need to stop resisting your urge to smile and simply enjoy Jim Carrey's performance. I will grant you that much of his work is of a low brow nature ... so what! As a comedic actor he is on the same level as Robin Williams (go ahead and TRY to make fun of HIM). As a serious actor, he is not yet on the same level as Williams. He is, however, close and improving with each such role. If Sunshine did not convince you then revisit Man on the Moon. Look past any dislike you may have had of Andy Kaufman and you will marvel at what was an incredible performance.

He is the same person doing the same thing in the majority of his movies. Majestic and Eternal were different and appreciated but the madness that will be seen with Leoni in their next film will not be appreciated by many.

He did ridiculous funny with Ace Ventura and The Mask, insane semi-drama with The Cable Guy (a mediocre movie, but the acting was, I think, perfectly over the top), he seems to be doing more witty humor in the new movie with Leoni, he's done humorous/serious as Kaufman in The Man on the Moon, and he pulled off serious acting in ESSM (from what I hear -- I didn't see that one). I thought he was great in The Truman Show -- if you put the logistics of it out of your head, he made it seem plausible. To me it sounds like he actually has some tremendous range as an actor. As a comedian he's a master of facial expressions (yes, Keanu Reeves. I'm looking at you), physical humor, sarcastic humor, understated humor. He gets the short end of the stick because he's known for Ace Ventura primarily. Granted, it's idiotic humor and it's very childish humor, but it's funny nonetheless.
But I guess that since I like Jim Carrey, I'm just "not all that intelligent", is that right? Clearly, Mark, you're right there at the top of the gene pool with everyone else who thinks to dictate other people's tastes for them.
But, hey, who am I to say anything? I'm so dumb, I don't even like Harry Potter. I guess the deep underlying philosophy, the original storylines, and the creative, articulate writing is just too overwhelming for me. Oh, wait, it doesn't have any of that. Maybe I just need your intellect to understand it.

i read somewhere that there are some people who just cant like jim carrey,im not interested in knowing the name of the guy who wrote this article and im not gonna scroll up cos he doesnt deserve any labor whatsoever for saying that jim carrey is at the shallow end of the talent pool.lemme just push aside acting for a moment and bring in light comedy.im a comedian myself and like most other one's its grown on me out of desparation, dark childhood and everything.so i can say on the record that if theres anything difficult, its making people laugh.go ahead big mouth, try it.lets see how many grins you can get after swallowing your pride and acting funny in every way.coming back to acting,i personally believe that in all his serious movies, truman show, man on the moon,majestic,essm..noone and i mean noone could have done better than him.especially essm.he was totally outstanding and not every actor can brag of outshining kate winslet.so check your facts before opening your big mouth not so expert.

Hey champ, there are no "facts" involved in an opinion.
And for the record, if you actually waste your effort to scroll up you'll find that I agree with you on EESM, so there's no need to get all bent out of shape about it.
