FX shot from Japanese version of Pulse ripped for remake?

About a month ago, Ryan reviewed Pulse, a four-year-old, little-seen-stateside J-horror flick that
UPDATE: Added screenshots. Original on top, remake on the bottom. Aside from coloring (which I think is mostly an artifact of screencapping), what looks different to you? I think they either lifted the shot and added a little bit of digital trickery - which may not even be illegal, considering they own the rights – or else, they're making a VERY faithful remake.

It is rare for Hollywood to be "faithful" when remaking things which results in quite a few failures. With that being said, if they are being more faithful here, from what I have seen of the trailer that is a good thing.

You've gotta be kidding me. This looks like it only vaguely resembles the Kurosawa original, smoothing out the narrative weirdness and making it into a vastly more conventional ghost movie.

I noticed this during the previews too. The shot looks identical to the one in Kurosawa's original. Perhaps they thought it was too expensive to re-shoot this image? Or perhaps still too taboo, given post-9/11 shellshock.
Another possiblity is that the re-make will expand the scope of the film to a worldwide epidemic, thus enabling them to use footage from Japan without alteration.

Just thought I'd share that I got a hold of the original Japanese version of Pulse. It is called Kairo and was released in 2001 based on the information I have. So far it is pretty good. I am looking forward to the US version...
