Grandma's Boy: thank you, Adam Sandler
Filed under: Comedy, New Releases, Movie Marketing
Grandma's Boy, the latest feature from Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions, is selling itself based on an official website that you have to be over 18 to visit. Woo hoo! Though I suppose expecting a classy campaign from the people who brought us Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo and The Hot Chick is a bit of a fantasy, this just seems surpassingly dumb. While I can see frat boys lining up to get into a website (which I visited - entirely for professional reasons, of course) that offers a trailer with large, naked breasts, and a clip featuring swearing and masturbation, I just don't see how that's going to translate into a profitable movie - the movie isn't NC-17, after all.The footage on view, while it actually does contain some legitimately funny moments (though, since I laugh like a hyena at Weekend at Bernie's, you might want to take my opinion on funny with a grain of salt), is ultimately just insulting in the apparent lack of effort it displays. Reviews are going to be terrible, and it just doesn't seem coherently dirty or funny enough to bring in an audience, even of people who dig dumb comedies.
If you're over 18 and really bored, go check out the site and let us know what you think, particularly if you're a fan of Happy Madison's other films - would you be willing to sit through 90 minutes of what it shows you? Even if you can't get into the site, you've only got a few weeks to wait: the movie will be dumped in theaters the first week of January.

How annoying. I DON'T LIVE IN THE U.S.
This actually made me scream with frustration.
What the heck are they checking against anyway?

I think we are going to see more and more people admitting that they laugh at WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S now that it has been surpassed by MRS. DOUBTFIRE and PATCH ADAMS as the most unforgivable movie ever. I think BERNIE's is hilarious, but I got nothin' nice to say about the sequel's underwater voodoo shenanigans.

I actually saw this movie this weekend at a free preview at G.A.M.E. (game and music experience, a videogame/music expo here in sf). I have to say the movie was actually very funny, but it's definitely geared towards gamers as the movie is about (obviously) gamers. Nonetheless it was a stupid movie, but when does a movie need a great storyline to be funny? The actual story/conflict didn't even come into play until the second half of the movie, the beginning was just a lot of random funny moments.
On a side note, some of the actors were there afterwards for a Q&A session, and they were just as hilarious in person.

I work at a movie theatre on a major university campus and we showed an advance screening of this film on Tuesday. It's terrible. The game references are incredibly stupid, and include lines like "I like your bitmaps here, they're very... Miyamoto." (that doesn't even make sense!)
Our advance screenings usually sell out the entire theatre, and this film didn't even manage to fill half our seats. Avoid it at all costs.
In other words, if you have zero taste in film, you will LOVE Grandma's Boy.

well I have to say, as a gamer, that the quote mike gave us "I like your bitmaps here, they're very... Miyamoto." was hillariouse in the context they had it in. I, along with all my co-workers at Earthlink will be seeing this movie on friday the sixth.
