Night Watch US release date - FINALLY

By now, internet buzz about the Russian sci-fi/horror/action flick Night Watch has been growning for months which sounds, paricularly when one can't actually see it, like a pretty amazing movie. Based on the visuals alone (the US site is here), if nothing else it's a unusually slick, good-looking, creepy movie, which is more than can be said for a lot of what gets released. Its plot, which is based on a series of novels by Sergei Lukyanenko, tells the story of an age-old conflict between the forces of light and dark. Under the terms of a truce between the sides, the forces of light rule the day, and those of dark rule the night. "In modern day Moscow the dark Others actually roam the night as vampires while a 'Night Watch' of light forces...try to control them and limit their outrage." Got it?
The movie was originally scheduled to be released in the US over the summer, but it was pushed back and ultimately disappeared from Fox Seachlight's release schedule. Just the other day, though, the folks at Fangoria received word of a new, official date: February 17, 2005. Woo hoo! Getting greedy, it may be safe to assume that, if Night Watch is reasonably successful here, the sequel, Day Watch (which is due for a Russian release shortly) will follow, hopefully sooner than later.

I imported the russian dvd of this last year and was incredible disappointed. I think I actually disliked it more than Underworld. The flick was very boring and the story didn't seem to go anywhere properly. Be wary of the hype.

I agree and actually did the same thing a year ago. Upon first viewing I was lulled into the fantasy of it all, but when I showed the film to a friend the fantasy had worn off and I realized the movie was wildly unglued. It isn't so much that the film is hit and miss, it is just that it really doesn't make any sense.
Maybe these "revolutionary" subtitles can do something for it, but I'm far from hopeful.

Do you think it will make more sense when the second one comes out?

Had been released in Germany in the summer - nothing to be excited about. Just your usual ambitious horror/fantasy flick, heavy on visual fx and light on story. Sorry to disappoint you. D said it: Be wary of the hype.

Sigh. This is what I was afraid of - thanks for the info, guys. (I'll still see it, of course, and then complain about it.)

actually, it was far far superior to Underworld, in my estimation.
and i dont mean to nitpick, but its the first of a trilogy.. so its not supposed to tie up all its threads into a neat little bow. your mention of the upcoming "sequel" Daywatch made it sound (atleast to me) distinctly pathetic.
so, to recap: its the first of a trilogy. its VERY well made. some of the best effects work ive seen in a while (and no i dont think thats hyperbole), and it has a reasonably coherent mythology and storyline to boot.
yes the movie may be a bit "unglued" but id recommend it over tripe like Underworld.
its far from a boring retread (which Underworld most certainly was).
ok, im done..
tho, im still reeling from the first poster calling Underworld superior.
anyhoo...

This movie sucked. The trailers do their job and make it look good (visuals and so) but watching the film was a chore. The best aspect of the film, the visuals are presented in the trailer. The story left a lot to be desired and was not as entertaining as it should have been given the positive hype.
Underworld was much more entertaining overall.
The two Night Watch sequels will just complete the story and will not likely be much of an improvement entertainment wise although the same entertaining visuals seem to be there based on the trialer to Day Watch...

I also saw the Russian DVD. There's a full review on my blogsite. The special effects are pretty impressive when you consider the film was made for Four Million Dollars.

Wow, a release date made public 10 months later!

I as well got the russian version, but I feel it could be a better movie if dubbed/subbed properly. The subtitles were confusing at times and the translation seemed broken. Being based on the best selling russian novels, I do trust that the films are quite good when understood or possibly with a little more background dubbed in. However, this has yet to be seen, and I'm fine just waiting for a proper dub to come out on DVD.

I think that this film is getting too bad of a rap, mostly due to all of the folks who aren't taking a little time to try and understand it.
First, I believe that most of the commenters above expected way too much out of the film, which will always disappoint. These expectations come - in part - from poorly-written articles that describe Night Watch as some kind of vampire-horror-spookfest, as well as the seasoned practice of judging a book by its cover. Not to mention the misleading trailers.
And second, I CAN'T BELIEVE that so many people find this film to be so difficult to follow. Turn on your brains, for pete's sake! Listen and pay attention, because unlike Vampire-Werewolf-A-Go-Go, this film isn't going to hand you a thorough read-out of every single detail just to spare you the trouble of thinking.

I have the movie, I liked it, my wife didn't. Tastes vary, but this is a well done movie. I agree with the posters above. This is better, far better, than your average hollywood, video-game-to-movie-o-rama flick machine output.
It's a story, it's complex, you have to watch it carefully, but its entertaining and something different.
I think Day Watch will be even better.
Reminds me of the xFiles...well just in one respect, which is that story was lame the first season, it takes a while to get into it, into the universe. Once you are building on the previous stories, it only gets better and better.
