Castle Wolfenstein, the movie
Filed under: Newsstand, Games and Game Movies
Despite the dismal failure of their previous effort, Doom, iD Software is refusing to leave well enough alone. Next up in their game-to-movie pipeline? Castle Wolfenstein, a game I remember playing on an Apple II way back in the day. I assume there have been some changes since then.According to iD CEO Todd Hollenshead, Wolfenstein will improve upon Doom because they've got some crazy, new ideas. Like, for example, "actively soliciting a Hollywood trained writer to help us out with the story and the dialog on the game." While hring a screenwriter to work on a game really shouldn't be a new idea, it's still a good one. Of course, Hollenshead goes on to say that the screenwriter might only be a consultant to "whoever writes the movie," so maybe Doom didn't teach them anything after all.
Talk to us here, gamers: are you truly looking forward to a Wolfenstein movie? Did Doom make you lose any faith in iD?

Obviously they aren't going to follow the storyline of the original *Wolfenstein 3D* game considering you kill Hitler at the end.
The Allies purposely did not assassinate Hitler during the War because they feared what would happen if a competent military leader (like, say, someone of Rommel's stature and talents) took over. Hitler kept on making strategic blunders because he was high on meth most of the time thanks to his rather insane personal physician (check out the documentary *High Hitler* that airs on the History Channel). Compare that with how they handled Heydrich; they had him "ventilated".
Damn, I feel like breaking out my Atari Jaguar to play a few rounds of that classic game. Probably the most satisfying game played on *God Mode*.

It's funny to me that people keep thinking that video games made into movies can be good. Does anyone remember the Mario brothers movie?? ridiculous.

There's something to be said for concepts and properties remaining on the medium they were created for and **not** being constantly shifted across multiple mediums just for profit.
It's hard to name more than a handful of good comic book or video game films... made in America. (Japan seems to have this whole schtick down releasing many titles in manga, novel, game, and movie formats as evidenced by Battle Royale and so many others) The thing is, though, that generally, in the U.S., it just leads to cinematic tragedy.
I wish they would leave well enough alone and put however million they plan to spend on another bad movie into a making a new good game!

Patrick, its doubtful id Software would be contributing any of their monies into a filmed project. In fact, they'd be receiving monies for the studios and thus even if it is a krappy flick, it will be indirectly financing other id videogame titles.
Heck, look at Microsoft. Here they have like $50 billion (U.S.) in the bank and did they even bankroll the *Halo* film production? Nope. Of course, they aren't exactly geniuses like George Lucas, so I digress.

The Doom movie was at least co-written by Wesley Strick, who is (and has been for over a decade) a Hollywood screenwriter.
After looking at the link, I'm fairly certain that Hollenshead is saying they will hire a writer to punch up the game's script into a more movie-like format, which they will then presumably shop around.

Also - the Return to Castle Wolfenstein game they mention came out several years ago... fun game, but the story is not in anyway compelling enough to make into a movie, at least in my opinion. Totally basic game plot.

As long as that useless bastard Uwe Boll is not involved it should be filmable...

Finished, but at least Uwe Boll did not make that travesty called *Wet Hot American Summer*. Wow, I can't believe I'm becoming a Boll apologist. I guess I just want another rental from NetFlix to make up for *Wet Hot...*

The only thin iD software is good at is making game engines. Other than that they simply turn out sequels to their own franchises that are completely unoriginal for the most part. See Doom 3 a.k.a. Monster Closet 3000. There are plenty of games out there with great stories that could translate into a good movie (Thief, Deus Ex (1), The Warcraft Franchise, Starcraft) but I don't see RtCW as one of them.
