A Bronx Tale actor in critical condition after shooting
Filed under: Newsstand
Lillo Brancato Jr., who made his film debut at just 16 as Robert De Niro's son in A Bronx Tale, is in critical condition today after being shot while breaking into an empty Bronx house. According to wire reports, Brancato, who was unarmed, was breaking into the house with another man when "a gunfight erupted." An off-duty cop was killed in the fight and Brancato was hospitalized after being shot twice. After his acclaimed performance in A Bronx Tale, the Columbian-born actor continued to find supporting work in films such as Crimson Tide and Enemy of the State and, in 2000, landed a reoccurring role on The Sopranos (which ended memorably when Tony shot him).

The NYC local TV news reported last night he was in critical condition and the other suspect in serious condition at Jacobi Hospital nearby. It was told, the officer, off duty, shot in the leg, drove home into his driveway then taken(?) to a hospital where he died (hope he wasn't left on a gurney like Australian Hasidim Yankel Rosenbaum to bleed to death, after stabbed at a vehicular accident caused "riot"). Why would anyone "break" into an empty house? Maybe he's Columbian till proven innocent.

The writing has been on the wall for Brancato for years! At least now he'll have years (in jail) to deal with his drug addiction. I heard they were in the wrong house...they were supposed to rob a drug house.

A lot of you are jumping to conclusions. The guy might have been doing nothing more than hanging out with a bad element. Do we even know if he has ever held a gun in his life? Not yet. Howling for blood like a lynch mob zombie isn't going to get anyone justice.

Only reason cop got involved, was because next to his apartment. This idiot, did it without getting backup. They should postumously throw him off the force. He should of stuck to minding his own business, harrasing hardworking citizens, shaking down drug dealers, and passing out tickets like most cops.

The police said he wasn't even armed...yea he got picked up in June with all of that heroin, but that doesn't mean he's a murderer too. I think he should just get a burglary charge...and it's not even really burglary if it was an empty house. Breaking and entering maybe? From the sounds of things he does need rehab though...I think they should give him minimal punishmet as far as the whole burglary/murder thing goes, but his sentancing should be to complete a drug rehab program.

A talented actor. It's just a true shame. Regardless of whose fault it is, whatever happened on that evening resulted in the loss of life of someone. Doesn't matter if it's a cop or whomever, it was someone and that person isn't here anymore due to what happened.

The best cop...is someone w/ the fortitude, depth, and understanding of a priest. When unstable psychopaths, w/ inferiority complexes are allowed to become cops this type of outcome is inevitable. Most cops are unstable wise guys, who panic, and have a need to show, and use their guns, to make up for what they lack in character. It's not unlike an addiction. For that moment that they brag they are cops, and brandish their guns, they feel like complete men. PD needs to take a closer look, at the crap, and psychos they hire. They take it all too personal, and are quick to escalate things out of control, to the point where they all act like frenzied wolves on a kill, especially ehen they are confronting unarmed, and safe citizens, As they did in New Orleans, when it took six cops to jump from behind, and beat the crap out of an unsuspecting elderly man.

Brancato, may have/had drug issues, however what's the cops excuse for apparently acting like an idiot. The city needs to protect us from unstable cops like this. Look at the cops picture..The only thing worse than a male cop w/ something to prove, is a female cop w/ the added burden of dispising men, and now being outfitted (in their eyes)to become more equal in stature to a man.
Dear Mr. DeAngelis, I like your style..and thanks for making me laugh..I am sure you were thinking of allot more names to call me..

Amazing, really, Vasilis.
An off duty cop investigates a robbery? Wow! What a moron! Doing his job? No one should ever hope cops do that!
No, it doesn't matter that he was unarmed. He was comitting a felony and his accomplice killed a man. Felony Murder.

They were probably investigating the cries of a cat they heard coming from the abandoned apt. After checking to make sure a cat wasn't stranded, and while on their way out, they were confronted by a loud braggart, looking like a typical neighborhood thug, hoodlum carrying a gun, and threatening them. Even if he caimed he was cop, the way he looked, and with all the recent police, and firefighter impersonations, and being in a bad neighborhood, the one with the gun felt he had to protect them before this lunatic who claims he's a cop kills them...The cop was unable by training, or natural genetics to overcome the situation...It was only a matter of time, before he met this end. He met his end because he was concerned about the "burglary" of a vacant/empty/uninhabited apartment..How Brave..
Ask a cop on a street to confront drug dealers obviously dealing drugs, see what they tell you.
I can tell you stories of our "finest" that would also affect your feelings towards them.

A person was killed during the commission of a felony. Both suspects can and should be tried for murder. If found guilty and since it was a police officer that was killed, the death penalty should be invoked. I'm no cop lover but screw this, these two are low-life criminals, contaminants in the soup of society. Because they were too lazy, too stupid, too weak, or otherwise unwilling to work steady jobs(rather than steal), a productive young life has been taken. I personally am grateful for the actions of someone like officer Enchauteguithat, a man that is willing to put his well-being on the line to help prevent scavengers like these from flourishing in our mostly civilized society. Most of the people posting to this thread should be ashamed not only of the content of their thought but also of their limited ability to transfer their silliness into written word. All of our thoughts and prayers should be with the families of those affected by the selfish and foolish acts that resulted in this tragedy.

Unfortunately the death penalty was re-banned in 2004, but Brancato will spend the next 25 years in prison for murdering a hero cop.
