It's official: Earthsea is coming!
Studio Ghibli is the granddaddy of Japanese animation studios. It has brought us, among other things, the wonderful films of Hayao Miyazaki, a list of which includes Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, and Spirited Away. Ghibli also seem to work with Miyazaki's son, Goro, as they have just confirmed that he will be directing their long-rumored adaptation of Ursula K. Le Guin's beloved A Wizard of Earthsea. The movie, which is due out next summer, is already being hyped on the studio's website. Even if you can't read Japanese, the site's worth checking out for the wonderful Earthsea teaser image on the front page - if nothing else, Le Guin fans can get some idea of how her world will be rendered on screen.

There was indeed a miniseries (info here: http://imdb.com/title/tt0407384/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnx0dD0xfGZiPXV8cG49MHxrdz0xfHE9ZWFydGhzZWF8ZnQ9MXxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8Y289MXxodG1sPTF8bm09MQ__;fc=1;ft=23), but it was very poorly received - I'm sure fans have much higher hopes for this version.

Hopefully she will have a little more control over this version.
