Viggo Mortensen: I am anti-Bush behavior
Filed under: Awards, Celebrities and Controversy, Politics
Viggo Mortensen – who was denied a much-deserved Golden Globe nomination yesterday for his work in A History of Violence – has been an outspoken critic of the Bush administration for some time. Now, in the latest issue of Progressive Magazine, he's clarified his dissent. "I'm not anti-Bush," he tells the magazine. “I’m anti-Bush behavior. In other words, I’m against cheating, greed, cruelty, racism, imperialism, religious fundamentalism, treason, and the seemingly limitless capacity for hypocrisy shown by Bush and his administration.” Okay, that's much clearer. Want some more? Viggo cites the administration's handling of the Katrina disaster, as well as the president's refusal to meet with Crawford-based protestor Cindy Sheehan, as dual failures that have left the actor particularly disheartened. “Cindy Sheehan and how badly Katrina was bungled are two shots to the heart,” he said. “I hope the beast does fall down soon." For those of you who might be moved by these comments to go looking for anti-Viggo ammunition, may we suggest G.I. Jane?

Cindy Sheehan is a clueless loon. Meeting with her or listening to her is nothing but a waste of time.

Yes, it's shocking how a woman could be reduced to an irrational quest for pointless information, driven only by the inconsequentially minute event of losing her son to a war in a foreign land. Shame on her.
You may want to aim your guns a little higher if you want to take an effective shot at Mr Mortensen's views.

I don't believe Mr. Mortensen really cares about the Golden Globe. True recognition of his incredible performance would have been nice, but as long as he is doing what pleases him, that is what counts.
As far as his comments about Bush, I couldn't agree with him more. I was raised to respect those in authority, however in this case my respect died a long time ago. I just hope Bush is a better man than he is President.
For those who are against what Mrs. Sheehan has done obviously are not parents and don't know or understand the lengths a parent would go to find out the answers as to why their child has died.

Sheehan didn't need an answer directly from the President and in my opinion she is just a glory hound.
Why'd her son die? Because he joined the military. There is no draft; its a volunteer military at this point. If you sign up, you go where they tell you to go. And if you don't like it, its your own fault for joining. Reminds me of the complaints that were made on television during Desert Shield; people actually saying they thought they'd never see combat and were now protesting against it.
Why'd we go to war with Saddam? 'Cos the guy defied the terms of the cease-fire that brought Desert Storm to an end over a decade before and the previous [Clinton] administration did not have enough ballz to do anything about it. Saddam did not live up to his treaty obligations, and kept on playing an apparent shell-game with the U.N. Weapons Inspectors and that cheesed off this Administration. Everyone can joke about the lack of WMD now, but what exactly did Saddam have to gain by bluffing over it? Nothing...he lost his regime over it, so why did he do it? Who knows. But at least he won't get nukes now. The other benefit to toppling homeslice Hussein was that it gave notice to other pariah regimes that their bad behavior would no longer be tolerated. As soon as the invasion happened, the U.S. and the U.K. told Libya that they'd be next if they didn't abandon their WMD programs. Guess what? They did. Without one bomb dropped on Libya. That's a success.
So, if I have the skills to logically conclude why it is our country is inside Iraq, why can't Sheehan do the same without making a fool of herself in front of the public? That's a real question to ask and ask her, not the President. We're certainly not there for the oil, because its been really obvious that we are all paying far more for oil now than before the invasion.
And before I get criticized, I'd like to point out one thing. The U.S. (and the U.K.) was the nation pushing the international community to forgive Iraq's foreign debts to breathe some life into the infant democracy there. In contrast, France tried to block such a move. Why? Because France (and Russia) was owned a giant amount of that debt thanks to their extensive weapons sales (on credit) to Saddam's former regime, which was the real reason why they opposed the Coalition's invasion and not for a love of peace. We should also remember that it was France that pushed for the massive reparations after WWI that destroyed the economy of the infant democracy of Germany (the Weimar Republic) that eventually collapsed and made way for Hitler's Nazi regime.
Iraqis have now voted for their legitimate representation, which is quite a change from the plebiscites they only participated in before. You know, like the last one where Saddam "won" 99.9 percent of the votes for another term as President. For those people that say that 2,100+ American soldiers lives were not worth losing and yet think that fighting World War II and losing thousands of soldiers in that war was worth it are deluding themselves into not believing they are racists. Because if white Europeans deserve democracy, then Arabs certainly do too. Those same people also forget that we "occupied" Germany after the end of WWII and it was not an easy transition to democracy there either; in fact, there was also an insurgency there too. Learn history.

I couldn't agree more with his opionion of Mr. Bush. The whole Iraq thing was nothing more than a plan before he even took office. In one of Mr Bushs' speeches he even stated "this is the man who tried to kill my father". Now if that is not personal what is. The only bad intelligence mentioned is his recent speech to the people the the lack of his intelligence to think that we are gullible enough to believe that he can keep passing the buck on to others. I wouldn't be suprised that the money missing from the twin towers was used to fund the beginnings of our war on Iraq. Maybe I just watch too many movies like. "A Long Kiss Goodnight". Maybe that's where the idea came from. He is killing off the poor and the ill.Why is it that everytime there is a cut it comes from SSI and Medicare, and Welfare, not warfare? Then how about televising the big dinner with all his rich friends, I'm sure they weren't eating macaroni and cheese or ramen noodles, and we are paying for it in all the cuts. I have never in all my years seen so many people resign from under a president. Primaries are coming up and alot of people want to be re-elected, so maybe we will see another inpeachment by the time it is all said and done. I know that if I were him I would hide my head in shame. Hussain on trial and he didn't do anything to us, but Bin Laden walks a free man, if I were George I would be looking over my shoulder, under my bed, in my closet, and never, never let my children out of sight. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Bin Laden lives in DC, at the Saudi Embassy with the rest of his family, maybe that's why we can't find him over seas. All I know is that the wonderful military is dying for oil, lower unemployment rates, and so George can try to finish what he thinks his dad started. Meanwhile, he is driving alot of us into financial ruin, and we are adding way to many tombstones here at home between soldiers, and medical cuts for the poor and elderly, and hurricane victims. He's not stupid though, he moved alot of them to Texas, so he could allot Texas more money to try to make it look like he really cared about the people, bull....! Hopefully, it won't take forever to recover from Mr. Bush if we don't have a nuclear holocaust first. I am one of the poor, so I feel every bit of the Bush Administration. I am proud to be an American, but scared for my children and now my grandchildren having to suffer, because of one man's revenge. It is kind of like "The Lord of the Rings", if you have the extended version 12 disc set you would know that it is written actually about WWI, and Bush is Saurman. God help us all!!!Mr. Mortensen is multitalented and shows great intellegence and has also had the opportunity to lives in various countries and I greatly respect his opinion. Actually, I couldn't have said it better myself. I remember Vietnam, this is worse, just hope it doesn't last as long. And Mr Bush should know remember "What goes around comes around", those people are not kids on a playground, this is for real, I don't see his daughters going to the military, it is co-ed, they are too busy with college and a room close to the bar near the college that is there favorite hang out. While we pay the Secret Service to watch them and their friends get stoned, drunk, what ever you choose to call it. Right now I don't think he could have enough Secret Service to keep anyone safe, although I wish nothing ill toward anyone, I sure wouldn't want to be him. Bad intellegence, who approved it?
