Peter Jackson's next project: The Lovely Bones
Filed under: Deals, Scripts, Peter Jackson
Now that Peter Jackson has finished taking over the world with King Kong, I'm ready to see some news on his next project -- a film of Alice Sebold's novel The Lovely Bones, a story about Susie Salmon, a 14-year-old girl who is raped, murdered and dismembered, told from her perspective after she's in heaven, as she watches her family cope with the aftermath of her disappearance (her body is never found).
Jackson said back in January, when he acquied film rights to the story, that the biggest challenge would be visualizing Susie's heaven, which is deliberately vague in the book. The film will be a major change for Jackson from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong, but I'm really interested to see what he does with it. I absolutely loved this book - read it from cover-to-cover on a plane trip - and I don't want to see the film version screwed up. Thoughts from fans of the book on who should play Susie?

Hopefully this is another one of his wife's ideas. The last time she had influence on his projects he made Heavenly Creatures, which isn't just his best film (actually its his only good one, in my opinion), it's one of the best films of the '90s.
Maybe he can somehow slip some claymation in there and avoid the CGI completely, as he did back then.

HC wasn't completely devoid of CGI -- in fact Weta Digital was formed to do the digital effects on that film.

Film it quick, before Dakota Fanning is old enough.

Thank heavens someone else feels that way too, Boyd! Dakota is just way too overused - its as though Hollywood thinks she's the only child actress available. And her "style" that was once oh-so-cute when she was half her current age has now become rather cloying as she gets older.

No thoughts on who should play Susie, but I will say I'm still disappointed that Lynne Ramsay is no longer going to be making the film, especially since the few comments she's made about it imply that it was taken away from her out of monetary considerations. I liked the book, but it walks an awfully fine line that could turn into Hallmark sentimentality mawkishness in the wrong hands. Peter Jackson's a great filmmaker, so he'll probably avoid this, but I'm still sad that we'll never see Ramsay's version.

Oh, I loved that book, and I had no idea PJ was going to film it! Can't wait to see it.
Let's see how he portraits the sweetness of the story, because it is more of a sweet than a sad one IMO. It portrays the post trauma of having lost a loved one in such traumatic circunstances very well.
And the scenes in heaven wil be interesting to watch as well.
Here in Spain the cover of the book featured a gilr that even had a resemblance to Dakota Fanning (nowadays one of my faves actresses, despite her age) so I agree she would be a great choice for the role.
I have also seen recently the Narnia movie and the little girl is also lovely, but maybe she would be too young for the role? But a good option as well.

Oh, right you are David R. I forgot about the effects used to transport them to their world of fantasy. And I'm sure there most of the clay effects were actually done with computer as well.
Either way, it still looked better back then.
