X-Men Update: Halle Berry Babbles
Filed under: Action, Casting, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Halle Berry is a very controversial figure in the Marvel fan community. She has performed as Storm in the X-Men series, and sort of as Catwoman in the laughably bad film of the same name. She professes
a desire to avoid typecasting, yet continues to return to comic book films, much to the chagrin of many fans. Berry recently spoke to Extra about her upcoming
performance in X-Men 3, and said that she is happy that her
character will be seen in flight for the new movie. According to Berry "the fans would see me on the street and
say, 'You know, how lame are you- you don't even fly.'" I hate to break it to you, Halle, but I really don't
think a flight scene is going to repair your image with "the fans."

Just to let you know. Catwoman is DC, not Marvel. Trivial? Yes. Am I a dork for knowing that? Yes. Proud of it? Yes.

Well the movie really had nothing to do with the comic book version of Catwoman. It really should not be considered a comic book movie, just a bad career choice.

Catwoman was bad..yes both x-men movies are excellent..i think its unfair to constantly to cast a negative eye on halle berry..fanboys have habit of tearing down the thing they claim to love Halle berry is fine actress(not perfect)and very nice woman i met here here in cleveland a few years back and i think she meant the true fans will like to see Storm fly and we will...

Yes, Catwoman is DC. I think I'd be the worst geek ever if I didn't know that. It still hurt her image within ALL comic fan communities.

Whatever image Halle has with the fans was created by Singer who has admitted not understanding the Storm character to begin with. She was not given a Storm like story line to work with and this is the first movie in which she will be able to do a Storm like the one the fans know. Fans should not call her lame, or any names for that matter, because it was not her desicion to make. "Why didn't she say something so her character would come out more true?" Some fans say, but she did say something and fans went to say "Halle Berry is a drama queen, she asks for too much like she is such a big star, how annoying is Halle Berry". Fans should make their damn minds. As far as I'm concern, this director knows all the characters better and doesn't seem to have a Wolverine fetish so now all of the other characters and finally Storm will have a chance to look and act the way they should have from the very begining. As a true Storm fan I know the character will be fine in Halle's hands this time around and her image will be just damn fine.

Halle lost points with me with her "my people" comment at the Oscars. As far as her portrayal of Storm, there was no sense of regalness, of constant self-control that even the comics manage to convey. Singer's fault? Maybe. I tend to blame Halle more, though, because doesn't an actor/tress have a duty to research the character they're playing? Well, I have no real complaints about her stint in X2... in fact I think more of Storm came through in that one, so maybe X3 we'll get the Storm we've been wanting to see?

Actors have no "duty" to research anything. That is simply a choice. Some do, some don't. Some want to put an entirely new spin on the character. You'll hear actors doing a remake (which is just about everyone these days) say they never watched the original preparing for this version. There are probably very few actors who sit down are read a bunch of comic books to get to know their character. Most probably rely on the script and/or director, who may or may not have read a handful of the comics once he signed on, for a take on how to play the role. I don't think actors take these types of projects as seriously in terms of research as the do scripts based on real people or events.

Not to mention that Singer told them all NOT to read the comics because he wanted to do his own take on it. Still, Halle bought a bunch of the comics to get to know Storm and she knows what the fans are talking about but, whatever improvemente she had for the second movie it was probably due to presure from the studio than because he wanted to develope her or because he listened to anything she might've said.

Strictly speaking as a viewer, I think her performance as Storm was... disappointing, to say the least. She was the most forgetable of the X-Men characters, showing limited strength or, as was mentioned before, regal attitude. The wee bit I know of Storm from the comic books always led me to believe that Storm was more authoritative, more take charge... just a stronger overall presence. Even leaving out the comic book version, though, one still expects a certain level of assertiveness from one's superheroes, which I found lacking in Halle Berry's portrayal.
But maybe that's just me...

Halle berry is an excellent actress and she will always be "STORM"!! She started off as storm and will always remain branded in the hearts of her true fans such as myself so lay off all you sleepers!! Bryan singer (the jerk) didn't want any glory for any of the other x-men characters because he only seemed to care about wolverine. I like wolverine but he is WEAK compared to every other mutant. Storm will fly real time because that jerk bryan singer is not on production team! YAY!!! Jean grey and magneto can fly as well!!!!! Long live orrora monroe (storm)!!!!!!!!!
