Hollywood Truths: #25
Filed under: Hollywood Truths, Movie Marketing
When a movie is advertised as "from the writers
of" or "from the producer of," that means that they're unsure of how to either market the movie and/or
the movie looks kinda lame so they have to do all they can to associate it with a better, more well-known
film.
I once saw a movie (can't remember which one) advertised as "from an executive producer of..." Huh? Who cares? Movies have often been advertised as "from the director of...," but who the hell cares about executive producers?
I can't wait for the day when we hear "from a friend of the man who was the assistant costumer on Superman Returns comes..."

not to throw my support in the executive producer's ring at all - but if steven speilberg or another big hollywood name is willing to put his name on the exec. producer line for a film, then i think that has a lot to say about what a viewer can expect from it. in some cases, i'd much rather see "from the executive producer of..." than boobs and violence stuck in a trailer that has nothing to do with a film.

I second the mention of Spielberg as Executive Producer. In the 80s his company, Amblin Entertainment, produced some of the best family blockbusters you'll ever see and guided the likes of Rob Zemeckis, Joe Dante, Don Bluth, Matthew Robbins, and anyone who directed an episode of Amazing Stories. Unfortunately since the mid-90s his name hasn't meant as much (executive producing The Flintstones, Casper, Twister, and other soulless blockbusters), and many of his disciples haven't made anything good without him, but it was what it was back in the day.
I can't think of any other name that has meant as much, however.

The credit that means the most to me is "From the writers of...". This can really mean something if they name a movie that I really enjoyed. This is rarely used though I think.

One of the worst credits announced in a trailer is "Oscar Winner Ben Affleck" for a movie that he is acting in. He received the award for co-writing Good Will Hunting, and it is presently debated that Damon probably did all the real work involved.
Still, anybody who would be misled to think that Affleck could ever win an acting award deserves to see his movies.
