Aquaman cast
Filed under: Action, Casting, Warner Brothers, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Ever since I signed on to the cast of the good ship Cinematical, I've been periodically updating you about the many
and varied rumors of an Aquaman movie. Eventually, it settled down and what we ended up with is an upcoming WB
made-for-tv movie as a pilot for a new series. Then, the casting rumors flew for awhile, particularly fueled by the
release of the casting call a short while back. Now, we once again cut through the endless stream of rumors to bring in
some hard fact. That's right, the underwater adventurer has been officially cast, and will be played by none other
than...wait, who? Okay, so his name is Will Toale, and he's apparently a newcomer to the acting gig, with the only
substantial bit of his resume being a supporting role in in A Streetcar Named Desire at Broadway's Roundabout Theater.
The pilot will begin shooting in March, and is expected to figure heavily into WB's fall lineup.
I continue to find myself oddly interested in this show. I'm not a huge DC fan to begin with, I deride Aquaman pretty regularly (and have for many years), and I'm not even all that keen on Smallville (heresy, I know). I don't expect to become a regular viewer of this new show...but I AM really curious to see what they come up with. Thoughts?

Something tells me no Vinny Chase or James Cameron in THIS one.

I'll be surprised if this show takes. Unlike Smallville/Superman, I don't believe Aquaman has a large enough fan base to support a show with this premise. An Aquaman pre-powers, out-of-the ocean, coming-of-age story? For fans of the comic (and I count myself as more of a fan of the genre), it's a turn off because Aquaman is the KING of Atlantis. This sort of requires him growing up underwater, completely away from the human world.
More than likely, this will be another teen eye candy show. The only reason Smallville gets the viewership it does is the eye candy appeal. It sure as heck isn't the writing, which is a shame since the pilot was absolutely phenomenal. In my book, Smallville is sadly a show that will never realize it's potential since the writers/creaters did focus more on flash and less of substance. Since the same creaters are creating Aquaman, I don't hold out much hope for the show.
I'll more than likely catch one episode, but I won't go out of my way to do so. Smallville broke my heart with how much potential was wasted (not to mention how the incredible talents of the actors who play Lex Luthor and Lionel Luthor are continually overlooked due to the eye-candy mentality of the PTB), so I'm not setting myself up for my heartbreak. Assuming that the Al/Miles can even come up with a decent base that'll attract some viewers.
I think this show will end up being anothe "Birds of Prey". The idea has potential, but the carry through will fall out and the show will die a quick, short death.

Was the rumor started by the ENTOURAGE series from HBO?

First of all, I like Smallville and I think the writing has been great. I wouldnt mind seeing Aquaman or another DC hero get a shot at his own show. However with the news of the WB shutdown, what will this do to Aquaman plans or Smallville?
