Big Bat-Rumors
Filed under: Action, Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Those of you who are regular readers of Cinematical are already fully aware of the ever-revolving rumor mill
regarding the two major Bat-villians for the upcoming Begins sequel. Well, over at moviehole a "fly on the
wall" has dropped some rather interesting information into the increasingly odd mix. First, we'll start with the
Joker, as it seems like every actor in Hollywood is interested in the part. Their fly confirms the popularity of the
part, but indicates that the studio (with the very excited blessing of Nolan himself) are interested in bringing on a VERY big name for the
role. Rumor has it that said name says he may be interested, if the script is right. Who, you ask? Well the fly puts it
this way:
"Let’s just say that he has a major film coming out this summer and it’s a sequel to one of his biggest hits. In fact, his performance in the first movie was nominated for an Oscar."
The first name that leaps to mind given that description is of course Johnny "Captain Jack" Depp, who would be quite a big name indeed. His name has been tossed about the casting rumor before, but never with any legitimacy.
Second rumor regards a femme-fatale character, who would be making her first appearance in Batman film history. Let's turn to the fly for the scoop and the casting rumor:
Regarding the character- "she has a very close connection with a major character in Nolan’s first Batman movie. She will be out for revenge against Bruce Wayne and Gotham in a major way."
Regarding the actress- "let’s just say that she is nominated for a SAG, a Golden
Globe and is on her way to an Oscar nomination as well. She is also in fact five months pregnant and will be in tip top
fighting shape once production begins to roll early next year but not before she throws a few coins in a
fountain."
When I first read pregnant I thought "dear Lord not the Tomb Raider," but then the rest of the words in the description processed and I realized that Rachel Weisz is probably the call here.
Wow, okay. Thoughts? At first, I was rather hesitant about the Depp call, simply because I was afraid his presence may be too large, taking the audience out of the experience- seeing not the Joker, but Johnny Depp AS the Joker. Further thought leads me to conclude that I'm drastically underselling Depp's talent as an actor, and I settled on concluding that the man would be an excellent casting choice. As for Rachel Weisz- I think she's a talented actress, but I'm not sure what part they are angling for with her, so I don't have as much to say about it. Bat-fans out there have any thoughts on this?

I think that rachel weisz might be Ra's Al Ghul's daughter Talia Al Ghul. Vengance for her father's "death".

I second that one, Talia seems to make the most sense, seeing as the dark knight hasn't really crossed anyone else yet.
I guess we'll have to wait and see!!!!

Any rumors on whether Harlequin will make an appearance?
And here's a thing about Talia's background, in the comics at least:

Or she could be playing Helena Bertinelli, The Huntress and daughter to one of New York's ganglords; it woudl fit in nicely with our glimpse in the first movie of Carmine Falcone. Hell, maybe movie #2 could be an adaptation of sorts of the wonderful "The Long Halloween" series.

Harley was created for the animated series, right? I don't know if they'd bring her to the movies, necessarily.
Johnny Depp seems obvious when you think about it. I'm not much for The Joker. He needs to be very deranged, very dangerous, and just looney. It doesn't seem to fit the tone of the Batman movies, not without changing him too much so he's not The Joker, just another criminal. You need that looney aspect.
I think Depp is one of the very, very few that would be able to pull it off.

im guessing that ( even though i would like it ) it wont be harley becuase they state the actress would be playing a character out for revenge on bruce wayne. No tone was set in the 1st movie about this, and i dont think that there will be enough room in the movie for her, given the fact that there will be two bad guys. Ra's Al Ghul's daughter Talia Al Ghul is by far the best pic ive heard so far, and it definatly fits with what the new batman series will be trying to accomplish. I was sceptical at first with the angle, but its perfect. OH!!!! and what about Adrian brody for Joker, i know thats old, but i really think hes perfect, watch the scene in Jacket where hes on the table laughing, youll see what i mean.

Does anyone besides me have a problem with Ra's Al Ghul being white? and his daughter if she is Rachael Weisz being white as well. I am the most anti-PC person there is but, shouldn't he at least be middle eastern? Or at least be tanned? I would accept that.

Sam...no he shouldn't as he is a white guy. Seems pretty apt to cast white people to play white people :)

Technically Al Ghul could still be alive, but due to the movies neglect of the Lazarus pit, i'm guessing not.
Someone mentioned the Huntress for the new female role. That is cool, but I doubt the movie would be going in that direction, but I could be wrong. I would like to see the movie go in the direction of Jeph Loeb's "Long Halloween" and "Dark Victory" because they deal more with early Batman lore, before the "freaks", as Gothams mafia gangs like to call them, arrived.
As for the Joker, I guess Depp *could* do it, but the Joker's true character is one of true madness and insanity. Read "The Killing Joke" and "Death in the Family" and you'll understand what I and others mean.

My first thought was Tom Cruise, as his big MI sequel comes out this summer as well. But Johnny Depp would work better in the roll for sure. I'm beginning to see it a little more that I think about it.

Okay. Why is it that 2 villians are supposedly
always better than one?
The Joker has always been the main foil of Batman.
And has so much behind him, history, deviltry
and everything that can support a single villian
again. He's Arguably one of the most known
supervillians in both marvel and the DC Universe.
If you add someone else into the mix. you water down
the timing, and everything that makes a batman vs
joker movie something to go see.
Noone in they're right mind before the movie started
said Jack Napier/Joker could be pulled off by Jack Nicholson. Fan boys all over were Calling Tim Burtons batman as the #1 flop in the making. And when it was
all said and done, people loved it. Said it was the best thing since sliced bread. And for 29.99 you could get a sliced bread maker with the bat emblem on it thanks to marketing.
Hopefully the 2nd women character will be something in the backdrop and not a main character. Most comic/movie geeks want to see the down and dirty fight
with Joker and Batman. Please do not water it down
with a 3 way (okay that just sounded really bad there)

If the character is Tallia she could very well be a background character. She could be there to seduce bruce at the request of her father just to screw with him and make him put his guard down. From what I remember about her even though she liked bruce she cared more about her father.

Johnny Depp is the very best actor who ever graced the silver screen. There is nothing he cannot do especially if he likes the role. He has done many roles and been perfect in every one of them. He is more than bankable. He is fantastic!!!!!!

I wouldn't mind if Johnny Depp was casted, but I think Nolan should give other actors consideration.
I think this second film should introduce Talia, because she would fit perfectly. Bruce thinks Ra's is mortal, since he discovered that Ducard was really Ra's, debunking the theory of immortality. So when his supposed daughter shows up, it will shock him, and when Ra's comes back (which he probably will) hopefully in the 3rd or 4th film, he will be even more surprised.

The Joker has always been portrayed as a hilarious psycho and I definately think Johnny Depp could get inside the mind of this character and give us more than any other actor has done to date. He has the ability to morph into his roles and we forget that it's "Johnny" after a few minutes and we see his vision come to life. I would LOVE to see what Mr. Depp does if he's the one chosen for this role.

Great now I've got visions of Willy Wonka as Batman's nemesis. Johhny Depp would be a great Riddler.
I vote for Patrick Walburton as anything. He would do a wicked King Tut or Two Face.

Ok let's go back to the film, Ra's Al Ghul was not white. Ducard took over after Wayne supposedly killed the original Ra's Al Ghul left him (Ducard) behind. Ra's Al Ghul was actually Ken Watanabe and his daughter could be something other than asian if you look at Al Ghul's globetrotting history.
But It would be a nice angle on the false immortality idea, kind of like the "Dread Pirate Roberts."
