Johnny Depp, Ginger Man?
Filed under: Classics, Drama, Casting, RumorMonger, Newsstand
According to a report in the Irish press this
morning, Johnny
Depp will star in the long-awaited screen version of J. P. Donleavy's novel, The
Ginger Man. The novel, a stage version of which was shut down in 1959 after it ran afoul of the Catholic
church, tells the story of a "feckless, womanizing American...soldier - supposedly - studying law in Trinity
College after the Second World War." The main character, Sebastian Dangerfield, is both "one of the most famous characters in Irish fiction" and an utter bastard; needless to say, the right actor is required to render him tolerable on screen, let alone likable. For that reason alone, it's easy to understand why Donleavy has traditionally refused to allow the book to be made into a movie, despite repeated attempts. Now, though, after an encouraging meeting with Depp, the author has reportedly changed his mind: "Mr Depp is something else. He is very bright, extremely intelligent, and very knowledgeable."
No other information is available about the film, and it will doubtless be a while before it can get started since Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is not expected to really get going until this summer.

Mr. Depp is one of the finest actors of Any generation, as well as one of the most sincere, humble human beings that have ever been in the Limelight. He has an incredible knack for morphing and nailing a character moments into whatever role he is cast in. He seems to be getting better and better as well, raising the bar with every performance.Ok,so every now and again,he Will take the $$$ payday flicks, but one thing is for sure,Johnny Depp puts out 100% EVERY time, and his choice to portray Sebastian Dangerfield is masterful..We can only hope His involvement will lead to good friend Sean Penn joining the cast,as well as other enticing possibilities.Im under the impression that mostly Irish, but a multi-national who's who of Rock will also be contributing to the OST..possibly U2,Bono,The Pogues and NYCs underground Gracious Revolution among others TBA. Although the filming may not start as soon as most would like,Im following this one closely..I have a feeling this is going to be 'one for the ages'.
Cheers!

Allright, enough pirates of the caribbean. Let's get on with it, I've been waiting for this, along with millions, for many decades. Can Johnny become Danger? I've seen so many novels screwed up on the screen, but I believe he can. Be Sebastian Dangerfield.
God Save the wild
Ginger Man

If anyone can do it, Johnny Depp can. He is, from everything I've seen of him, which is every movie I've been able to find and every interview I've had time to watch or read, everything the author says he is. He is also very intuitive, from what I can tell. He'll be able to find that one redeeming quality and play it so that the audience detests the guy just the way they should, but not so much that they stop watching....
