Superman the ANIMATED movie
Filed under: Action, Animation, Home Entertainment, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
What would the day be without another update on the
Superman movie? Well...today's update doesn't exactly fit
the standard News of Steel we've been getting lately, although it fits the technical description. The folks over at Superman Homepage have an exclusive image from the
upcoming superman movie. Not another one, I hear you say. I've had as much Brandon Routh as I can take lately. Well, good readers, this look at the
Man of Steel has absolutely no Routh in it...or anyone else associated with him. This is a look at the new ANIMATED
superman movie, set to hit later this year via direct-to-DVD release. Dana Delany and Tim
Daly will reprise their roles from Superman: The Animated
Series in the upcoming movie sequel, wherein Superman finds himself facing off against the threat of both Lex
Luthor and The Brainiac (while of course wrestling with his relationship with Lois).
For fans of STAS (yes, that includes me) this mostly under the radar animated flick promises to be a quick spot of mindless fun. It's certainly nothing to get super (horrible pun most definitely intended) excited about, but I plan on watching and enjoying it.

It's as tiresome to hear old timers talk about "black and white" being the way Superman was "meant" to be seen and how George Reeves is the only real Superman as it is to hear about those proverbial 10 mile walks through snowstorms to get to school.
Sorry, oldsters. Times change.
And what it is with gay/wimp conflations here? You've not seen many gay men, have you?

I won't be in a hurry to see Superman as portrayed by Brandon Routh, because he's too thin and only gothically handsome (implying a vampire or a gay man--sorry, that's the image he projects to me). I thought Christopher Reeve was too flimsy too--a namby-pamby Superman? They need to find a square-jawed hero type to play Superman. Dean Cain was surprisingly good in the role of a young Superman, but for those of us who grew up with the George Reeves version, the movies haven't even come close to the right image.

Watch Smallville on TV. It is very, very good and I think Tom Welling is great as the young Clark Kent. Only thing I don't like is there isn't enough action, too much talk. The storylines are well written to keep us viewing it.

If Superman is going to be animated, at least do it with video manipulation which uses a computer and video memory banks for the production of movies that look like real people act in them. The action can be more intense and the characters can look and act exactly like people want them to. With video manipulation, which is a 30 year-old idea, you can construct people with the computer and even the most fantastic will look natural. No post-production will be required for special effects because they could be done in the room where they are being programmed. I'm surprised Hollywood or even Pixar didn't make the movie already.

" Batman, Superman and Spider-Man. Batman, Superman and Spider-Man. " I'm getting tired of the same old thing over and over. How about something new, different and may be something we forgotten. How about maybe " The Shadow or The Green Hornet. " There are many other good and forgotten superheros. How about a little variety.

It is great to see continued support and involvement in the Superman legend. Certainly, a great role model type for todays youth as opposed to many other negative "video game" hero's. I do wonder, in the future looking back, whether someone will hypothesize that our generation worshipped GODS such as Superman, Spiderman etc....

On the WB11 news yesterday it was revealed that Tyrese was approached to play Luke Cage, Power Man!
Someone mentioned The Shadow on here. It was done already.....where've you been?
Alec Baldwin played the lead. It was ok but it didn't generate much buzz.
Let's see....this Fall The Ghost Rider's (with Nicolas Cage)coming out. X-Men III's coming out in May. V For Vendetta was ok (based on a DC comic book and starred Natalie Portman) and is coming out on DVD om March 21st.
The Aquaman movie is being cast as we speak....
There's plenty being worked on. You've just got to know where to look.

I can't wait for this movie. It is right where Superman I & II (written by The Godfather author, Mario Puzo) left off. Superman Returns is using the original John Williams theme music and archive footage of Marlon Brando (that should have been in Superman II). This movie will be far greater than Lois & Clark or Smallville, and I can't wait. I can't believe the comments I am reading above. Did I mention we are also getting a genious to play Lex Luthor...one of the best actors of our time, Kevin Spacey.

I have to agree with a previous writer, the present day actors playing Superman are too thin and mamby pamby. George Reeves will forever be the classic Superman, no one since him has even come close. I was never a fan of any animated series and don't think this one will change my mind. Superman, in black and white, that's the way it was meant to be....

I AGREE WITH PETE.ALTHOUGH I LIKE THE PREMISE,HOW ABOUT A NEW SUPER FRIENDS MOVIE WITH THE WHOLE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA AND ALL THE BAD GUYS IN THAT SERIES.I MYSELF WAS A BIG FAN OF THE DC COMIC SGT. ROCK AND IT'S PREDECESOR OUR ARMY AT WAR.THEY HAD PLANNED A MOVIE ON THIS LONG AGO WITH ANY AND ALL THE MAJOR ACTION STARS(ARNY,STALLONE,EASTWOOD,WEATHERS,WILLIS,ETC.),BUT IT NEVER GOT DONE DUE TO THE COST AND EGOS WANTING THE TOP BILLING FOR THE PROJECT.THESE GUYS MAY BE GETTING OLDER BUT WITH MAKEUP AND EDITING,THEY COULD BE RETURNED TO THEIR GLORY YEARS IN A SNAP.NEXT YOU COULD HAVE SPEILBURG,AND SOME OTHER TOP PRODUCERS WORK ON THE PROJECT TO MAKE THIS A BLOCKBUSTER TO END ALL BLOCKBUSTERS.A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE SICK OF TODAYS WAR MOVIES BUT GREGORY PECK,GARY COOPER AND THE DUKE ARE GONE.YOU COULD FIND SOME DECENT ACTORS TO FILL IN FOR THEM SUCH AS CHIKLIS,VIN DIESEL,VIC RAMES,MEL GIBSON AND OTHERS.HOLLYWOOD SHOULD GIVE THIS ALPHA MALE TYPE MOVIE A SHOT INSTEAD OF PRODUCING THESE BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN TYPE FLICKS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SENSETIVE TO LIBERAL INTEREST GROUPS.HOLLYWOOD NEEDS TO GET A "SET" ON THEM AGAIN.THEY ARE IN TROUBLE FINANCIALY AND HAVE FORGOTEN WHAT MADE THEM GREAT.

I will probably buy it. :-) As for the new movie, I am 100% in favor of the reachback to Superman I but am not too sure about the actor. I agree that a classic square-jaw hero is needed.
Oh, I agree about Smallville, too much talk/soap opera...not enough action BUT they seem to be getting better/moving closer to his going from Superboy to Superman. :-)
As for other superheroes, a series that was great when it was on, The Flash, is now out on DVD & a pox on the Network Execs who killed it off in the first place. ;-) Let's see Iron Man/Tony Stark (they can even do the muntions industrialist thing, just change it from Vietnam to Iraq/Afghanistan) and Hal Jordan, the real Green Lantern. :-)

The best Superman was George Reeves. Brandon isn't to skinny just don't like his looks and I didn't care for Christopher Reeves either. Wimpy/gay..I'll give you that. George Reeves was the best one...he can't be replaced!

We don't need an animated "Superman." Movies have the capability to give us a powerful depiction of a mature Supperman. Wait for Tom Welling to reach the proper stature and allow him to act the part - which he does wonderfully as a younger Superman. In fact, the whole Smallville cast are great actors! A good script is also important so use the "Smallville" writers. I know this can be accomplished.

I'm just worried that we'll get a crappy movie like Superman IV, or another Daredevil. True fans of the comic will only take so much. As far as the hero goes, I grew up with Christopher Reeves as my Superman, and was just old enough to realize that he wasn't as well built as my older brother. There has to be a tall, broad shouldred man, with a chiseled jaw in Hollywood somewhere right? I'd take an unknown over this nancy any day.

I'm praying this new Superman will be good. I've had so many dissappointments in the last few years. I think Brandon Routh is perfect for the role, although I grew up with Christopher Reeve in the role, I always thought that George Reeves looked a little too beefy for the role. I guess its a generational thing.
I'm less worried about the look, (although I think Nick Cage would have looked funny in the outfit) then I am in the plot. Mario Puzo is dead, so I hope the plot isn't contrived and silly. How does Lex go from "the greatest criminal mind of the century" to a wealthy industrialist? If Superman leaves for some years, how do they explain clark kent being gone? If the answers to those questions aren't realistically written, this movie is going to be as bad as Elektra, or The Shadow, or god forbid Man Of Steel and Catwoman

I don't really like this new Superman, but im going to wait and see the movie before i judge him. In my opinion, he looks too scrawny to be Superman. His suit looks kinda puffed to me, and not too natural. He reminds me more of a happy-go-lucky primadonna then a hardworking farm boy. But i heard he could act, so we'll see. I would've approved of Tom Welling in the movie, or maybe even the whole Smallville cast (which would probably signal the end of the show though). I think they should give Welling a shot. He looked a lot like Superman when he was carrying (er, flying with) Lana out of the Fortress of Solitude in the last episode. But that's just my opinion.

I have enjoyed Smallville so much. It brings back memories. It does seem to be getting more exciting as Clark moves toward becoming "Superman". I watch it weekly with my daughter and grand-daughter which makes it more special.

For folks who want a SUPERMAN tale that's
well-written and well-executed, the animated
film will be quite a treat. Don't understand
reviewer Mark Beall's comments about said
film being "mindless" fun, since Warner's
animated series represented the most
thoughtfully-conceived, thought-provoking
SUPERMAN stories on screen; helping to
set the stage not only for the quality
yarnspinning of SMALLVILLE, but the
challenging drama of Dwayne McDuffie's
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED.
Maybe the reviewer was confusing the
upcoming animated feature with LOIS &
CLARK. Whatever fun it may have offered,
its mindlessness remains beyond question.

Making a movie of the Justice League is interesting, but how about the Justice League of America, the Avengers, or possibly the inhumans. Another possibility, Kid Eternity.
